I "THINK" thats the more recent one,"IF" I remeber correctly. So, unles its a defect in the ECM I would rule it out and I dont think it is.

Re: engine pings

My distributor was easy to reinstal, only because I marked the rotor posiition and distributor position on the intake, also didn't rotate the engine AT ALL... but on a fresh engine install... usually just making sure the harmonic balancer TDC line is at 0*, then line up the distributor to number one... or am I wrong here?

Thats pretty much how it is done. On new engine, you have to prime the oil pump and that moves the oil pump drive. Thats when it becomes a bit difficult to align the distributor, you have to move th eoil pump drive to line up with the distributor drive gear or line up the distributor and then turn the crankshaft to line up th eoil pump drive. This is where the fun starts.

Ohn yeah, so much fun sometimes you invent new words for the distributor. However "IF" the motor is out of the car when you drop it in. It becomes a little easier than leanin ovef the fender to do the same thing.

I would think one would risk cracking or damaging the #@&*!distributor on the way back in..??

Re: engine pings

you can always get the engine all lined up then mark the position of the distributor and remove it before installing the engine

Re: engine pings

O.K. here is an update. Last night I checked the distributor and it was one tooth off. I spent some time getting the oil pump drive and distributor to line up, but it is finally set correctly, rotor pointing dead center, to the front, with the timing mark on "0" TDC. I also replaced the knock sensor. Now with the engine running, if you tap the exhaust manifold with a hammer, the timing retards. Took it for a run today and no pinging, but the weather is crap around here, cold and raining so I am not really convinced yet that the problem is gone. Believe it or not, it is supposed to rain until at least Monday. If the sun ever comes out, I will take it for another test drive to see if the issue is resolved. More to follow.

Well, the rain finally stopped out here and I took the GTA out for a run. Air temperature was around 60 degrees. After fixing the distributor, I reset the timing to factory specs ( 6 degrees advanced). After the engine warmed up, the engine would ping when accelerating from a dead stop. Not as bad as before, but definetely still pinging. Didnt have the scanner hooked up, no copilot. Wonder what to check next, maybe the ESC ( electronic spark control module)? Maybe I will try setting the timing back to 4 degrees advance. Any advice will be appreciated, this is a bit of a pain.

The documentation that came with the engine calls for R44TS plugs and that is what I am running. Maybe dropping down to an R43 is not a bad idea. Definetly want to resoleve this before the engine eats a piston. Wonder if the EGR is possibly bad, I replaced it when I changed the engine.

I would stick with the 44's. Next what octane are you runnin? 93? Also, check you f/pressure and see where its at, it should be around 42psi even though I have mine set at 46 now. Also, go back and check your vac advance since you have dropped your dist again. Make sure its kickin in like it should. Oh and do you have a Haynes manual? If you dont I would "HIGHLY" recommend one they have a large amount of info in there. Good luck

In most cases GM electronic ign distributors have a vac advance. I have seen them w/o but its usually with a lock out for racing.

Fuel pressure is set at 48 psi. I use Shell or Sunoco 93 octane fuel. Vacumn advance? That is something I am not aware of, this is a factory electronic ignition system. I dont have a Haynes, but I do have the GM maintenance manual.

Hmmm, I would find that odd. I would think on factory set up it would have one. DO the 88's and up come with the big HEI dist or the small cap dist w/ the remote coil?

They have the small cap with a remote coil. Two connectors go in to the module that is under the cap. No other attachments other than the plug wires.

For that matter, I didn't think any TPI engine came with vacuum advance. I thought any and all advance was controlled by the PCM via the EST (or ESC, I always mixed up the two). Is this not the case?
