Question How rare are 88 GTA 5 speed with 5.7 & t tops?

I had a chance to pick one up Black T tops with 27,000 miles. and all options except leather. it was a GTA with 5 speed and a 350.
told the dealer 7000 and he said if it didnt sell in 3 weeks they sold it for 7300 Doh, they wanted 10

I don't think they made any 5speed 350's for the TA or GTA. In 88, they were afraid to challenge the Corvette and GM would not let any car faster than the Vette out. They didn't catch the GNX or the TTA, probably because of the 6 cylinder.
I may be wrong, but this is what I remember from that time.

It could be that the previous owner of the car originally bought a 350ci/Auto Tranny GTA, but he decided to swap in a manual tranny. The GTAs were NOT able to be had with the big engine and manual tranny because at the time, the T-5 transmission was not able to handle the huge amount of torque that the L98 put out. I'm sure they can be built up to be strong, but a T-5 from the factory would theoretically be eaten alive by the big motor. So, if the car is a 350/manual, then chances are that it is not factory original.

There was no stock 350 Engines with a 5speed Manual Made in the 3rd Gens they didnt come out until 1993 with the first of the 4th gens.
If you guys go out & start looking at 3rd Gen cars to buy the best way is go out & get a book called "Catalog of Firebird ID Numbers 1967-1993" they have one for the Camaros as well. Heck you cam almost get ones for almost if not all cars out there today. It gives you a Break down on the Vins, Service Parts Id lable, Trim Numbers, Paint type, Paint coad, Engine Numbers, Tranny, Rear axle & the RPOs.

No third gen ever came stock with the 350 and 5-speed. I have seen tons of people claim to have this combo and be proved wrong. The most common mistake is that they think they have a 350. Most dealers and people who dont know the truth will look at any TPI engine and call it a 350 just because it has TPI. Dont trust dealers either. I have caught many in the area claiming they have a third gen with a 350 but it turned out they had 305's. One dealer in this area claims to have an original GM 91 formula 350 convertible.

91GTA, Thats why when we go looking at Camaros or firebirds we take our books with us. "Catalog of Firebird ID Numbers 1967-1993" & "Catalog of Camaro ID Numbers 1967-1993" the newer Camaros & Firebirds are fairly still stock (unless you are my husband whos um moding out his 95 Z28 lol)

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask, what is the only thing telling you this car have in it a 5.7? You wrote "the emisions sticker even stated 5.7 liter". This emisions sticker you are talking about...is it the one sticking on the undersiding of the hood? If so, maybe hood is not originally from this car but from another one that had a 5.7 engine. Is vin number sticker under hood too? Is so, is it matching or does it look like sticker was taken off and reattached before? Or is vin sticker even missing from under hood? This is what I would be suspecting if I were in this situation seeing manual transmission in this GTA. Maybe it's not a 5.7...Yumiko

The Vin plate at the windshield the 8th # will tell you the engine.

The Engine it self will also tell you there is a Engine Number that is stamped to the engine V6 it should be located on the right side of the block & on a V8 it should be located on a bad on the front of the block below the right cylinder head.
This will tell you the Motor unit # the Engine type code & the engine vin # (sample : 88 GTA with 350 123456 CUA 2JN100001 OK here how it breaks down : 123456 is the motor Unit Number.
CUA is the engine type code this one is a 350 V8.
2JN100001 is the engine VIN
2= pontiac Division
J= Model Year (1988)
N= Assembly Plant (Norwood)
100001 Last six digits Vin

Question T-tops with a 350 in 88???

to the best of my knowleage they didn't offer t-tops with a 350 in 1988 either, that may have been an aftermarket install. also just a note... it may not be orginal but it sure is a sweet car... the 350/5 speed it truly awesome!!!

T-tops, leather, 5 speed with 5.0L TPI were the only GTA options.

I meant that only three options were available to the GTA, not exclusive.

GTA Year: 1988
GTA Engine: 350 TPI Automatic
Re: How rare are 88 GTA 5 speed with 5.7 & t tops?

No 350, 5 speeds were made from the factory. It was to much for the cars. I also have read and heard that there were never any 350, ttop cars because of the same reason so I doubt there is a 350, 5 speed, ttop car either.
