1988 GTA exhaust question

Quick question for y'all.
I want to purchase an 88 GTA from somebody in another state. I know the 89 GTA's
had the option of the dual cats exhaust. So what does the 88 come with? single or dual
outlet? Thanks!

Exhaust

I have a 1989 T/A with a 5.7L TPI and Dual cats. The exhaust is dual thru the cats, then merges to one, and procededs to the muffler. Then it comes out of the muffler, on each side, out to the rear.

The 1988's, I beleive have one cat, that runs single to the muffler, then exits the muffler on both sides, then is dual to the rear of the car.

Hopes this helps!

Re: 1988 GTA exhaust question

Next Generation Parts sells GM Dual Cat kits, but they are kinda pricy. You can get a custom dual setup for cheeper from a custom exhaust specialist.

cats

not ALL the 89 GTA's came with dual cats...that was an optional package...the 88's had a single cat....most people will say its not worth the time and $$ to upgrade to the dual cat system

exhaust

I wouldn't bother running dual cats. You won't see any improvement in performance plus it costs more. I run an edelbrock header system w/ Dynomax catback exhaust. The car runs high 11's with just this set-up.

ehhaust

According to GM literature in 89 the optional dual cats bumped HP up to 235 from 225. That is not a blistering power increase, and might not be worth the $$$ to up grade to.
