Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
I believe the only options for GTA's was hard-top or T-top... that's it. Even in 91-92, when the convertible returned, GTA's did not have it as an option.

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
Some dealerships had ASC install them.
So, it's a dealer option. I have seen some new in Pontiac dealerships back when the GTAs were new. The job was really good, like on the Grand Prixs and such. Somewhere, I have the flyer on them. They were not the 99 dollar cut the top, and put them in, cheap black ones. Hope this helps, George

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
I have never seen a sunroof on a GTA other than a aftermarket one.

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
So I just picked up a 1991 with an ASC power sunroof installed. Absolutely perfect fit with the roof and much larger than the cheap add-on sunroofs. There is a custom coach modification placard in the door panel with the VIN information. I'll gladly post pics if requested. Pretty excited about the project, as the body is straight, needs paint, interior, and motor worked on. As an aside, it also has aluminum rear drum brakes, which I am currently investigating the rarity of. Much rather have disc, but having an all-original survivor with the ASC sunroof is pretty exciting.

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
Welcome aboard sixguns, and congratulations on your purchase.
While I grew up in the era when cheap, pop-up, aftermarket sunroofs were cool, my tastes have changed. That said, I did see a few in the late '80s done by a local shop on a couple of Monte Carlo SSs our dealer sold, and those things...if you didn't know they were not factory, you would have thought they were. Smooth, slick, flush, with matching headliner cloth covered sunshade. So some of them do look very nice. As you would expect from American Sunroof Corporation.

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
All the cars I've seen in person first hand, I've never seen a sunroof on any third gen for that matter (Trans Am, GTA, Formula, and Firebird). I have seen T-tops, hard tops and convertibles on all these different models though. But never once a sunroof. Now on line ads are the only place I've seen any of these type of cars with a sunroof.

No sunroofs from the factory, period.

Re: Did Gta's Come Sunroof
I didn't intend to insinuate that this was a 'factory' installed option. Having built cars for years, I can tell that this was not built from the factory as a sunroof car. I have contacted TopKing, whose label is on the B-pillar as the installing company. Below is the text from their reply email.
Hi Jared, It looks like we did install an aftermarket spoiler roof into your vehicle. It was installed in Jan of 1991 for Christopher Pontiac in Kansas City Mo. They no longer make that roof, but it is a ASC 400 Spoiler roof. Tiffany Elliott TopKing Inc. 4200 Shawnee Drive Kansas City, KS 66106 913-262-3988 Unfortunately, the receiving dealer who had the sunroof installed is no longer in business, as I would love to get a copy of the actual window sticker. At any rate, having finally been able to dig into the car a bit, I am totally in awe as to how clean (relatively) this thing is for its age. I had to remove the driver's door panel to remove the lock cylinder so I could have a new key made, and the door panels appear to have NEVER been removed. Plastic moisture barrier still in place. After getting the key made, I was able to open the storage compartment in the hatch to get the SPI label, and there was a tire warranty card AND the original wheel lock id code still in the original wrapper. As for it being a steal, I may have forgotten to mention I picked this one up for $550... |
