Rear speakers

I just bought a 1988 GTA with the 5.7, and love it. After I got it I noticed the rear speakers were not working, so I removed the panels and found the speakers were missing. There was a plastic housing inside, with what looked like a home made wooden frame for whatever speakers were in there at onetime. Does anyone know how the speakers are supposed to be mounted? Any help would be great.
Thanks

Re: Rear speakers

One speaker option is a UQ7, 1 5" subwoofer and 1 4x6"
This takes the place of the standard speaker mount bracket

The other is standard 6x9 speaker.
There will be a fuzzy fiberglass "box" that attaches behind this speaker bracket.
It is mounted by this bracket as shown here:

Re: Rear speakers

This is a better picture/ad for the standard 6x9" speaker boxes.

This picture is reassuring.

Are you happy with the sound of them?

What subwoofer drivers did you use? My factory units have completely failed.

Re: Rear speakers

I used infinity 2 way 4x6s in dash and upper sails. Then an infinity 5 1/4" 2 way in the lower sails. Was able to push 86SPL before my sub woofers in the trunk hit their notes and went up to 97SPL.

Good quality speakers will produce a good note.

My current project car has the kick panels, dash, uq7 boxes and a single 12" sub woofer in the trunk well. I am using a 5" subwoofer from pyramid that fits without having to fiddle with the opening or mounting screws.

I'm seeing these in a 5" size.

http://www.amazon.com/Pyramid-PW577X...5%22+subwoofer

The dimensions of these strike me as a little odd. 5.8 x 6.2 x 2.8 inches. As a round speaker, I would expect a diameter, and a depth. Not sure what is what there.

This ad says "Having a top mounting depth of only 2.17 inches..."...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PYRAMID-5-Ca...item4641e55e2c

I'm I to assume that you are using something other than the factory amp to push these?

Re: Rear speakers

Thanks for the pics, I have the "boxes" but not the orginal brackets. I would like to try and keep the car as orginal as possiable, but want to put in some better 6x9's, any suggestions?
Thanks again

Re: Rear speakers

Do you custom mount all of them on the orginal sails?

Re: Rear speakers

The 6x9s should mount up the same as the factory ones.

I was running the smaller speakers directly from a phillips head unit which had a 52W built in amp.

The top depth might be how far they stick out. Im not sure, its been about 5 years since ive even taken the cover off my GTA

Re: Rear speakers

Not required. The four 7mm hexhead screws go through the four plastic holes along the perimeter of the top of the box and bolt in without space issue.

Re: Rear speakers

So the metal mounting bracket are not used, just the plastic " boxes"?
