Re: antenna replacement

Mine wasn't working when I bought my car.

Typical broken cable....but I didn't know that.

After buying a ''unversal'' power antenna from a supplier that didn't fit....even specified for F-Body.

I ended up bying this and made it work first try.

Re: antenna replacement

I've seen that thread. Can't find it, but I recall it. It's a Jeep part IIRC.

I sent mine off and had it rebuilt. Guy uses a plastic coated steel cable. Nice and smooth.

Re: antenna replacement

There was a pretty lengthy thread on TGO about this from some years ago. I think this is it...

http://www.thirdgen.org/forums/histo...-thread-4.html

...and among the options discussed was having this guy rebuild them. I think they found him through the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) forum. He's a Buick enthusiast, Reattas IIRC. Very nice gentlemen. It was $65, which includes the return shipping.

From his post on the AACA forum...

Give him a call first, and talk it over with him. Nice gentlemen.

There are also some threads on how to do this yourself, but I felt for the money and time, it was worth it to me to have it done by someone with some experience at it.

So a "new" unit with plastic ribbon, buy an NOS replacement mast with plastic ribbon, have a steel cable added, or rebuild yourself with steel cable. Lots of options for you.

Re: antenna replacement

Thanks Guys. I wish I could find it.. thought I book marked it.. I will keep looking as it was a replacement antenna but someone said it was exact match to stock and was inexpensive. I do like the idea of the guy rebuilding mine though

Re: antenna replacement

You're welcome.

I thought I had a thread on that subscribed here, but apparently not.

Re: antenna replacement

For the money involved, send it out.

Many years ago, I did the cable replacement as described on TGO. Though not difficult, the time involved gathering parts, learning how to do it, and then 'tweaking' is well worth the $65 to have someone else do it. It's much easier.

The biggest PITA is getting it out of the car! BTW, if you break the plastic inner wheel well retainers (you will), you can get them at Fastenal. Lowe's and Ace also have some, your results may vary. Much cheaper than buying through OPG or CI.

Man, you got THAT right! Worse yet on my T/A Vs. an of your GTAs, because the fender vent intrudes into the already ridiculously small space you have to work in.

I did not want to cut the harness, so I also disassembled the lower half of the dash to get to the harness pass-through, and to the relay and harness. Shipped the antennae and harness as an assembly.

And once I had THAT apart, it became a "while I'm in here I'll also do X" sort of deal that really snowballed. I hate it when I do that to myself.
