My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

So I bought my GTA early november of 2014 with the intention of only doing little tlc over the winter.

I had a 1985 Black and Gold T/A fews years back and wanted to find another T/A.
I spent time on kijiji and local ads for T/A & GTA.

I finaly ended up with a 89 GTA with a 350 4 speed auto and T-top.
Original white and beachwood cloth interior.

The car have a healty 350 with thumpr cam, full exhaust, head work, tune tune and polish intake. Engine sound really nice.
For the price the car wasn't too bad at all.

I knew I had little things to do like the steering wheel, some trims and replace the aftermarket radio and B&M shifter. I'm more into stock appearance.

Only a month later I realize that...man it could look like a TTA....mmh this got me thinking.
I can't afford the real deal, why not make a clone...i'm not a fan of clone, but this time I said why not...couldn't be this complicated.

But I'm keeping the 350 in it, I don't have plans for now to find a turbo engine and swaping.

So here some ''as purchased'' pictures:

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

Then I started on the interior.
Redid the steering, it was pretty bang up and look horrible.

Then i scored a set are hard to find beachwood cloth back seat!

Next I found an original Loc radio, console plate and leather shifter knob and installed everything.
No picture yet lol. No done.
I also repaired my power antenna while playing with radio stuff.

Then I needed to find a TTA tach with boost gauge.
Finding one is hard, paying for one is too much for me at this point.
So I made one.
Its not 100% but it good for not until I can find a TTA tach or atleast an overlay.
Spent alot of time on this overlay I made.
Result isn't that bad. I only need to reprint with a better printer.

I also bought my emblems and decal from Phoenix Graphix.
Theses I will only put them on after a new paint.
Paint look good in the pics, but in close up there many scratches and paint touch up.

Next on my list:
Dye some interior trims
Make the rear ''turbo'' emblem between the tailight.

Looks good!

Just a suggestion here, but if you are gonna clone it, why not make it a better clone and it might be a little cheaper. You could always slap a turbo on the motor that's on it. It would then be a TTA, only unique now. I think STS makes a rear mount set up and I'm sure turbonetics could put together a kit as well.

I think the boost gauge looks excellent. Most people passing by wouldn't notice it's not a 'real deal' one.

Is that a GMPP motor? I had the 350HO with those valve covers many years ago. Ran strong!

Your car will be interesting to follow. Keep up the posts.

As far that I know, the engine is rebuilt, but its the original 350. Canadian car. So look like the combo 350/t-top is not commun.

I'ved seen STS turbo and others brand, but for now i'll keep the engine as-is.
Its in the last position on my ''to do'' list lol.

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

I decided to start on the body.
Its a 20 footer paint. It look good in picture though.
Its an older respray and its showing its age.
So i'm trying to revive it with clay bar and compound

The car overall only have two small dent both on the front drive side fender and no rust to deal with (rare on a canadian car lol)

In the upcoming days I will continue to buff it out.
I will find a good local body shop to get quote and see for a partial respray or complet paint.

I'm only debating on the rear spoiler again. Its not the best, but not worse have seen.
I might try to repair before spending crazy amount for a new one.

The two paint patch I have to deal with
This one I sanded it down and found a little dent. Very hard to notice.

This might need little more work due to the crack.

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

Finally the crack was because rust got in the weld that was previously done.
So nothing major really. I will clean up the area and use less bondo as possible.

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

Yesterday I decided to remove my aerowing and see if I can save it before going with a fiberglass replica.

I think I can save it.
I removed as much rust that I could and filled the split with strong adhesive.
Will it work? Don't know, can't be worst.

Right now I only have one side done and waiting for the adhesive to be dry.

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

I would rather have a new spoiler, but its pricey.
I'm in Canada, and spoiler goes for 350-400$ USD which come up to around 440-500$ cnd and that's not including freight.

If I can make it work for 8$...and a new paint I'll be pretty happy.
I will later after work if the glue hold up....

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

At that time, I was using the Chevy dealer in Heber where I bought my '93 Chevy p/u. John Wright it was called then. They had a good shop but could not make the repairs last. One time it had cracked again by the time I got the car home...

Re: My ride! '89 GTA project (TTA)

little uptade
My interior is looking alot better!
I still need to purchase some dye to paint a some trims.
And change bith front buckle
and maybe later I will change the carpet and headliner.
The Floor mat and carpet don't match. But it does match were the sun don't hit.

From this:

Looking good. So where in Canada are you located? If you are in Ontario, there is a place that sells the fiberglass spoilers that fit almost pefectly and it is $425 CDN. That is what's on my GTA...there was no saving my old one..
