Last Ohio E-Check

This month my 1989 GTA had the last State emissions check it will ever require. The next time it would be due is 2015, and then it will be exempt because it is 25 years old - or more. This is the third time I have had it checked since I have owned it, and it breezed right through again.

Like kids, they grow up so fast, don't they?

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

I had the same thing when I lived near Atlanta with my 88. Only it was every year. Before I moved it was getting easy for the new cars, just hook up the scanner and give out a printout. Mine was different though. It had to be run on the machine. They also had failures for putting it in OD instead of third. They worried me a few times that way. Telling me it failed and all.

Luckily there are no inspections here. Soon all of mine will be too old if it ever starts.

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

I am so glad to live in a state that doesn't do this.

Just seems like a hassle to deal with it, even if it does pass the first time.

Only certain counties as determined by our friends at the EPA.

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

Im stuck waiting until my GTA turns 30 to avoid any E-Check BS in Ontario. I thought it was 25 years, but turns out it has to be a historic vehicle (30 years) before I get that luxury...

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

I thought Ohio had COLLECTOR plates, no emissions, etc. Good for any car newer than 25 years, meeting specific criteria

I had normal plates before.. didnt have to get any emissions check.
I never had collector plates.. didnt see any benefit? The historic are great cause you pay like 15.00 and never have to renew again. but you can only be driving to shows, clubs and mechanic etc. to keep the miles low. perfect for me.

Yes, Collector plates are available for any car valued at more than $100.00 and listed in the NADA Classic Collectible and Special Interest Car Appraisal Guide. For cars not listed in that guide, other authoritative sources can be considered. Other documentation can include documented limited production figures. I considered using the stats provided from the Source page and TGO. Since I no longer require the eCheck, I don't think Collector plates have any value for me or my car.

Historical plates, on the other hand, are for vehicles 25 years or older and as has been posted, do not require renewal after issuance. The driving limitations can be a problem, but last summer I hardly drove the car much anyway.

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

I wish that my GTA did not have to be tested anymore. But I think it will always have to be tested if it is to remain in California. It has to be smog tested once every two year so far and that is the way that it has been. You are lucky that you do not have to get this test on your GTA like mine has to be.

Ahh California... lawmakers on steroids. who cares if they go bankrupt... they have such neat rules and regulations to save us from ourselves. Nothing against you.. Just spent time out there - used to consult - and wow.. its like such a different world.

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

I have two 1989 cars, which on Jan 1st of 2014, will be considered 25 years old. While the inspections are both expired in Dec., it's no big deal, as I will go after 16 days and get the antique tags. $50.00 for the life of the car, no personal property tax, inspections, or emissions - every again!

I live in portage county, ohio. We have echeck here also. My car passed with no emissions equipment and a punched out cat converter. My car is an 87 so no more echeck, straight through y pipe now.

Arkansas here has had no inspection since 1997... the red car still has its last inspection decal on the windshield... but I can't bring myself to go for the antique plates. Don't want to give up my personalized tags....

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

Interesting thread....I'm going to have to research my state of Virginia emissions requirements further. I'm under the assumption that any car that came with emissions, i.e. smog pump etc. needs to go through a emissions test regardless of year model, in which here in Virginia it's every other year.

Re: Last Ohio E-Check

Here in ohio it's every other year also, odd year cars on the odd years, and even year cars on the even years. Echeck is a giant waste of time and tax payer money. The older cars that pollute more are exempt, and the newer cars aren't. They don't check for emissions equipment other then a catalytic converter. If your car is 96 and up, all they do is use the aldl port to see if you have any codes. No check engine light and you pass, if your check engine light is on then you automatically fail.

It depends on the county you live in. Some have it, some don't. There was a big article on it two years ago. They are suppose to phase it out county by county, removing a few every year until it's gone. Even the head of echeck said it's a waste of time and money. I don't know if you smoke cigs or not, but that big tax they added a few years back was to help pay for echeck. Until a few years ago you had to pay 19.50 to get it done. It's has been free since probably 09-10.
