Paying the premium for the top GTA's

So i have began my search for my GTA with a budget of 5k i'm kinda discouraged by the inventory to be honest. For 10k you can buy just about any GTA on the market except the extreme low milage one's collectors buy. Is the premium to pay the extra 5k worth it for a top condition third gen GTA. What's the members opinion about this.

It would depend on what your plans are for the GTA you are buying. If you have lots of plans to make changes once you buy it, then I would stay with the lower priced ones. If you are just gonna enjoy the GTA as it is once you get it and not worry about anything other than regular maintenance, then spend the extra money and go for one of top end ones. Just my 2 cents.

I agree, I am also currently in the market with a budget of about $7k-$8k (once I sell my Scout ) and mine will be an investment based on my suspicion that these 3rd gen's will go the way of the 2nd gens as far as the price jump the 2nd gens have taken over the past few years.

Along those lines though, I also don't want to buy a trailer queen ultra low mileage one that I'd feel guilty about taking out every so often for some fun, so my goal is to get one with between 40k and 80k on the clock so I can still drive it every so often, but still be low enough miles that if they skyrocket in price I will still be able to get a return on the investment one day if I choose to.

I drive for special times but I bought it as a keeper. I put <500 a year on it and am keeping it for my son. Jason has the right approach but again, if you are planning on driving a lot or make a lot of changes dont pick the top ones.. just pick a higher mile nice one that has been well kept.
When guys my age retire then these will climb. not selling mine but thats when they go up

exactly and this really goes with any type of vehicle collector or not, you'd be a fool to spend a bunch of money on something you are going to hack up and modify, as well as drive a whole lot. Especially when as far as I can see there are plenty in the low price range that one could modify till the cows come home and you would not be out a lot of start up money. This being said, with the GTA's being a limited production car to begin with, I'd be more apt to just get a regular L98 equiped T/A and not try to go for a lower production GTA T/A. To each his/her own though, it's only money right

that one is exactly what I am talking about a nice clean driver.
if I told my wife I could have a toy for that cheap she would kill me for buying what I did.. The only way she accepts it is believing from me that these will be some good money cars one day.

Got a big show/cruise-in this weekend... over 1000 cars... cant wait
it will be one of maybe two I will take it to this year. waxing tonight and just re-painted the white lettering on the overflow cap and washer fluid cap... that was easy

Thanks for the replies. This will be my weekend toy not a daily driver. I am dead set on a GTA as it was my favourite car in high school back in the 80's. Finding a low mile clean one is rough. Being a short production like everyone knows makes this tough. I ran across this beautiful GTA with only 85k km's. The history of it is quite interesting. A rich businessman bought it and crossed off every box you can for the GTA as well it has the euro mirrors which is super rare. He sold it to the current owner who is retired with many muscle cars in his collection in a heated garage for 15 years. The oil pumped failed 15 years ago and caused a engine knock and has sat since. He's asking $6500 firm but not sure i want to put up that kind of money with all the unknowns for a car sitting that long with a engine that needs rebuilding or replaced. Here is the ad with pictures. For my own protection i left out the phone number and info as im considering it. Whats everyone opinion on this interesting find.

I don't know about that 177 # as I tried to order my GTA with 5.7L and T-tops prior to delivery and was told by my dealer,that configuration was NA. I ordered everything on mine except the digital dash and power antenna. I have the Bose stereo but the subwoofer was NA also. I would have to look at my sticker which is filed away, to see how mine was optioned, but I remember the price was 21+k and I had the salesman sign my order @ the then quoted price of 19.7K which is what the dealer had to sell the car for. At the time I ordered it,The dealer really didn't know if the car would be built. My car was built Jan 1987

If it was me I would probably buy this car,but I'm sure it is Canadian. Can the buyer provide good providence? 85,000 miles hmmmm offer him 5500

1989 you could get 5.7 and t-tops in US... some other other years in Canada.

One thing i have noticed the demand for the GTA's is very low here in Canada. It will be interesting to see if the collector car market discovers the third gens in years to come. The only thing i'm not really sure about is if i want the digital dash. I have read many members having to change it out for a analog and its a bear of a project if it fails. I have bookmarked one i like for 8k in another province. If its still available when i save the extra amount i will be getting that one.

1badGTA is correct about 1989 GTA with 5.7L and T-Tops. I am restoring my father's 1989 GTA with 5.7L and T-Tops. Only 27,600 miles!
