GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

Hello,

I am the original owner of a 1987 Flame red GTA. The car has 9800 miles on it and has been stored for most of it's life. Except for the roof and hood on the passenger side paint. I want to have the paint repaired.

I took it to a good paint shop and the estimator told me he would rather re-paint the entire car, rather than spot paint it. Also he said he could probably not save the emblems.

I want to keep the original emblems. Has anybody just had these masked over with tape and shot the car?

also what do you think of spot painting and blending the paint.

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

I would paint the whole car and replace the emblems with black ones.

Yes,

I think I will have to paint the whole car....probably costing $3500

The 3 emblems, 1 on the rear fender strut is colored fire red, the GTA emblem on the front fender is red, along with the hood emblem.

I guess they used what ever they had at the time.

Even if I had a total re paint I would still want to save the original emblems.....anybody have experience,is it possible?

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

I ran it down to Coachcraft Autobody and they shot me a price of 1600.00 to paint the car and he can save the original emblems. These guys have been in business for 50 years and forgot more than most know,so I'm happy as hell. I'll post some photos when I get it back.

$3,500 is a good price I think, to paint the entire car. Well, if they are not taking it all apart maybe that is what it is normally. In 1995 when I wanted my GTA to be repainted, the places that I asked price quotes from was all around $5,000. But I think they were going to dissassemble the car so there would be no problems with overspray getting on various places.

About the emblems, if I understand your questions about them, I think they should be removed before your car is repainted. They can be removed because they are just taped on, except for the emblem on the front bumper cover. They should be removed because the most important step of getting a good paint job is the preparation process, and it is too difficult to do this work while the emblems are on your car.

Good luck,

Yumiko

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

Yumiko,

Thanks......yes they are going to remove all the emblems. I had quotes of 6,000,4000,3500, and 1600. The lowest is not a full re-paint. The car is really like 95 pct, except for the rear spoiler, and roof. The painter will remove the front fenders, hood and spoiler, shoot the spoiler, roof, doors, and hood. It doen't have to be show room condition, although it is a "cherry" car. All the low mileage ones I have seen bring anywhere from 11,000 to 14,000,so I think it's best to keep most expenses down. I don't plan on selling it anyway. I paid 19,000 for it in 1987 and to replace this car now a days I could easily more than double that 87 price.

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

I might add my goal is to save as much original finish as I can. I don't know if that makes sense, but 1600.00 to me is perfect and this shop has always done great work.

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

I took some time today and installed some 4422 hood lifts today. I also cleaned it up a bit to get it ready for painting. It's been a long time since I looked around in the car. So when I found all the original mats underneath my custom fronts, I was really happy. I also found all the manuals in the back storage area, plus a Wolf bra I forgot I purchased when new. Overall a good day.

I'll also mention that it's been hot as hell this week,106 degrees and my two temp sensors tied to the add on Hayden radiator fan works like a champ. One fan comes on at 170 and the helper fan comes on at 200 degrees.

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

Your GTA is a beautiful car.
I would NOT get the whole car painted.
The fade is minimal and should be no problem blending into the original paint.
Unless they are taking apart the ground effects, mirrors, handles/locks, hood louvers and bumper covers - you will never have that crisp factory look.

As far as the emblems, some fishing line wrapped around 2 wooden rods
works fine. stretch the wooden rods apart and use the fishing line as a
saw behind the emblem.

They do have reproductions out there, but there is nothing like the original.

Good Luck with your decision.

Re: GTA Cloisonné and Emblems

I had the dent removal guy come out yesterday and fix about 4 dings on the passenger side. The first time I ever used this kind of service. This guy was amazing,he spent 4 hours on the car and wouldn't leave until he was satisfied. I couldn't even find the dings.

My car is scheduled for paint on the 22nd and I will post pics after. Just in time for Hot August Nights here in Reno.

Just a note the quarter panels, roof, spoiler and hood will be painted.
