lookin' for some shocks/struts

I have a 91 GTA 5.7
I love the way it handles.
It needs new shocks and struts.

I also have 5 other 3rd gen f-bodies with varying suspension upgrades.
But, I want to keep this one as close to stock as possible.

What shock and strut has the closest "setting" as the factory ones?

Monroe, Sensatrac and Gabriel would be fine for average 3rd gen f body, but what came on the GTA?

Re: lookin' for some shocks/struts

KYB GR2 are pretty good for price and what they do in terms of ride handling and road feel. That's my recommendations.

Avoid sensatracs, they don't last with regular driving...I had to replace a set of 4 in my truck that was used for daily highway driving after 1 year...

Re: lookin' for some shocks/struts

I wanted Bilstein for mine but couldn't find any to fit. So I went with the KYB GR2's they work pretty good.

When i replaced mine i couldn't find any identification on the original rear factory shocks - they just said "Gas Pressurized" and "Made in Dayton, OH".

And i agree you should avoid the Sensatracs. the car just doesn't seem to ride very well with them. i only tried some because they were ~$60/pair. if i replace them i will use Koni's. i had Koni reds on my '84 TA. they are pretty stiff but are adjustable.

Re: lookin' for some shocks/struts

My friend lives in Dayton Ohio and he said the GM plant that made shocks and struts closed down when GM was restructuring. (soo they are not available anymore)
I use Bilstein on most of my cars.
I have installed KYB GRIIs and people have liked them.
Koni has a line that's fairly good also.

Monroe, Sensatrac and Gabriel are not fine even for a average 3rd gen f body because they just don't last..

Re: lookin' for some shocks/struts

Considering I spent only $1,600 for the entire car

That would be 27% to 40% of the entire car!

The Koni website shows the Koni Sports shocks and struts for '82 -'92 Firebirds as having a lifetime warranty.

I seriously doubt they only honor their warranty if installed aftermarket on SVO Mustangs but even if they did Koni has no way of knowing what you install them on (you just need proof of purchase).

The warranty above is from the Koni website. It states:

.......This warranty does not apply to, and KONI makes no warranty for, shock absorbers and suspension kits that have been modified or installed as original equipment on any vehicle except Ford Mustang SVO;.......

Ford Mustang SVO's came from Ford with Koni Shocks/Struts!!

I do not know if they honor their warranty or not, nor will I give them an opportunity to prove it either way. I Like Koni products and will probably pass on these anyway.
If I get an adjustable shock, the Bilstein's have the adjustment on the side - I like that.

I have some extra KYB rear shocks laying around that I will install until I raise enough $$ to replace the front and rear (separately of course)
