What to pay for 88 GTA?

Looking at an 88 GTA, 350, red, hard top, grey cloth interior and 49K miles. Car is straight/paint is good and all documentation is there. Nice GTA.

I have a price in mind but wanted to ask what others are thinking?

Here's why...

The last few weeks I have been looking at GTA prices and they are all over the place! Anyone else notice that? I 'window' shop GTAs all the time, even when not looking for a GTA to see what is out there (never know what you'll find, I bought a nice 89 this way). So, I was surprised to see how wide the range was from last year when I bought one. Yeah, I know condition, mileage, and options play into the price, but it seems a lot of these people are way off base on price.

Thoughts?

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

I bought an 88 GTA, 350, red, hard top, grey cloth interior with 53,000 miles in 2009. so basically the exact same car. It was the original owner and he did $1200 in work to it before I bought it, I got it for $5600 and bought new tires, the car was more or less ready to drive although a few things started to fail because the car hadnt been driven in so long, Starter, Steering Pump Etc.. I hope his helps you, I would say an excellent condition TA as you described would be around $7500 now. However the prices in the states are usually much cheaper than up here in Canada

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

Sean,
You have a wicked GTA, I love the glamour shots link you posted.

Yes, it would be like your car. I have always wanted a red hard top GTA...that is why I have 2 black ones in the garage now! Funny how things work!

I am thinking if I can work a deal on this 88, I am going to buy it. It is 4 hrs away though, so I am not sure if I want to drive that far to attempt it. Talked with original owner last night, strange dude but to each his own. I would be the second owner. He is suppose to send me some more pics today so we'll see. Keep you posted.

Thanks!

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

Passenger side fender is popped out. I am a little suspicious of the exhaust too. Looks like a firebird exhaust.

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

Don't care about the exhaust, I am going to put all of my speed parts on it from another Trans Am I own.

I think the fender is just the camera angle, car is straight. He sent me some good shots looking down the car from the tail to the front and that fender is not sticking out. I'll let you know when I go look at it in person.

Back to topic, what would you two think about giving for it? I have my mind set for the max I would pay, just curious what you guys think.

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

Dunno. I wouldn't buy a non-t-top GTA. 8-9k is probably a good deal though.

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

I'd say 6000 tops.

Go have a look at it before you give him $$$ Pictures are great except when you buy sight unseen you run the risk of the pictures being either fudged, or taken from a different angle.
Also run the VIN.

Done, checked the carfax, clean. Also, he has sent me the SPI codes in a picture, VIN matches.

I would never do that. Just asking for trouble. Worth every minute of driving to see it in person.

I want a hard top, LOVE the smooth lines...but I also like T- top cars.

I have done a lot of looking and might be able to get this one for less than what some 100K cars are costing.

Again, thanks for the thoughts. You guys are all around the price I am thinking of offering. It has been for sale a while, hoping when he sees the cash in front of him I'll be adding a another GTA to the garage.

I have always prefered the hard tops. Just me I guess. Plus, you don't have to deal with some of the stuff you mentioned. I have a Trans Am with t-tops and I just like the HT cars better.

Re: What to pay for 88 GTA?

I'm not knocking anyone who likes hard tops. If you have ever spent a wonderful spring day with the t-tops off, you understand what I mean.

No offense taken. I saw your car on youtube and it is awesome.

Understand, but with a car as nice as yours, it is perfect the way it is.

I am finding that a red hardtop in good shape is harder to find than I thought originally. Done a lot of looking and this one is the best candidate for what I want. Sure, I have found others, but they need tons of paint and body work, which defeats my purpose of buying a solid car. For the price range, this is my best bang for the buck.

Trying to schedule something for Saturday to look at this one. Weather dependent of course....

Believe it or not, I have found several grey GTAs. One was real nice. And the price was good.

Found a green 91: a lot of black, white, and flame red GTAs. The red ones have all had T-Tops.

Having done a lot of searching, I have concluded how lucky I am to have two nice GTAs in my garage. A lot of junk out there for sale. I should post some of the links...You guys would laugh!

I'm torn on this particular '88, if it wasn't 4-4 1/2 hrs away I would have already looked at it. Wish I could find one closer...
