Taillight Covers

Anybody have a picture of a GTA or Trans Am with the blacked out taillight covers? Just trying to decide if I want to put some on mine

Re: Taillight Covers

2 guys in our club have them and they look good! You have to play around with how to mount them but they put them on where it looks nice. They mounted them with double sidded adhesive foam tape where light DOES NOT shine through the lens. At first they stuck them on with the supplied velcro and you saw the squares at night when your lights were on. So once they got that done they looked really really good. One even went as far as putting the Firebird decal on the center piece like it was factory. I will try and find a pic of thiers, they both were w68 Firebirds. Also we learned there are 2 variations of the black outs.... The early style were 2 pieces shaped like the design of the 91-92 TA tailights, these were the ones used on KITT for KnightRider. The second style was the 3 piece for typical third gen Firebirds. I would rock them 100%, hard to find though!

Re: Taillight Covers

BTW If you tint them make sure to use thin wet coats of the tint or else they look dry.

Always been partial to the stock look. Shine up the stock lenses with some Meguires Plastic Polish or wetsand them like 87bucket did if they are really bad.

That aftermarket stick-on crap starts to look too JC Whitney/ricer after a while.

Re: Taillight Covers

Mine are in great condition and need wet sanded and buffed. I love the stock look, just want to see a blacked out taillight. I like the taillights either way. Maybe I could find another set and tint them and see if I like it.

*checked out some tinted tail lights there ok but blacked out is a little better looking post #119 and #122 http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/au...-lights-3.html

Re: Taillight Covers

The guy with the red Camaro did an excellent lil write up. That amber delete with the red VHT almost makes me wish I had something I could do that with

He applied way to much VHT Nightshades. As from my experience you should be able to color sand and buff the Nightshades itself to a high gloss. Basically it's a aersol black candy paint. Yes you can clear it and polish that if you desire.

Re: Taillight Covers

I've been wanting to VHT my Maserati's tailights and may actually do it now. I bought a extra set and have some VHT laying in the garage. I would deffinetly clear them. The thing is does will the clear coat casue a chemical reaction to the aersol as with most aerosol paints?

Re: Taillight Covers

Nice, you were able to buff out the aerosol clear? I didn't think the mils would be thick enough. I might just try that I have tons of Duplicolor clear and VHT at home. I might do the Maserati's this weekend. I used the VHT on my backup lamps of my Laser because that lower section is blacked out. However they were so small it was easy getting a solid wet coat. I don't have any pics here of it....

Re: Taillight Covers

This at one time was a passing phase in my younger life with my GTA. I had seen someone with the plexiglass tinted front pieces on their own GTA while I was visiting back in Japan in 1990. I thought about how that white GTA looked and thought about it for about one year. I decided to get the same thing and so I searched around and found such plexiglass pieces and bought them. I got them and put them on my car but they were never as good as the ones that I saw in Japan on that white GTA there. The ones that I bought in America were very low quality because they did not fit so perfectly as the ones I had seen in Japan during my visit the years before. The quality and design was so cheap, not like the ones I had seen. I took a photograph of them on my GTA in 1992 which I can post on this site some time. Soon after putting them onto my GTA, I eventually lost interest in them being on there and so I took them off. It must have just been a passing phase that I was going through in regards to my own GTA. Wow.......twenty years ago.
