New member with 89 GTA project OVRMYHD

Hi everybody. My name is Jerry. My Dad sent me a link to this site knowing it would help with our project car. It's an 89 GTA, gunmetal gray, L98, auto, t-top and dual cats, car. My Dad bought the car when it was 1 year old from a local dealer. He then made a few mods to it like a chip, cat-back and adj. fuel pressure regulator. His best mod was probably GSC tires he ran (imo). Between 1990 and 1994 he regularly had the GTA at Tri-state dragway and occassionally at Edgewater. He ran in trophy class and gathered quite a collection of trophies in the car. He still talks about some of the races he had and especially some of the other racers, like Earl who would sometimes run his motor home (and win) even though he also ran an eleven or twelve second car.
Around 1994 Dad's life circumstances changed. He had polio as a child and it came back to haunt him again in a form know as post-polio syndrome. To sum it up, the nerves innitially affected by polio as a child were beginning to wear out prematurely. The result is a rapid loss of strength, endurance and a lot of pain. Dad owned a business at the time which he was no longer able to run as a result of his deteriorating physical abilities. Forced to sell the business, he quickly realized that he would no longer be able to afford to properly maintain his GTA. After racing it hundreds of times and putting over 150,000 miles on the clock he sold it the following year and parting with it left him with a whole in his heart.
In 2002 the car found it's way back on the radar at a small car lot just 5 miles from his house. He counldn't refuse it due to his sentimental attachment but quickly realized it was full of issues. It was no longer in the near mint condition he had always maintained. The engine had a hard miss in it, the transmission's shifts were softer, the interior was shot and even the tires and brakes were gone. He spent hours cleaning the car up and quickly became broken-hearted again as he realized he was in shape than when he sold it. Now it needed thousands of dollars put into it and his financial position was unchanged with no real promise of it ever improving. It sat in his driveway for a month or two before he traded it on a truck that wasn't in need of repair.
So here we are. I wanted to find one like it and put a stroker in it to race. After saving a little money I started looking for a car. I found a beautiful White 89 GTA on craigslist with a 383 that had grenaded upon intial start-up. The car already had suspension and brake work done and the interior was in pretty good condition, even if it was the tan or camel color that I'm not real fond of. After trying to contact the seller for three days he finally answered his phone to tell me he sold it about 2 hours earlier.
Disgusted, I shared my discouragement with my wife. She reminded me that two years before I had told her about seeing Dad's old GTA sitting next to a trailor on a back road. "Why don't you go see if it's still there?" she asked. Nearly falling over myself in excitement I couldn't believe it never occurred to me. But then, what were the chances? I couldn't even remember where I saw it, just that maybe it was somewhere behind my old high school.
The next day I headed that way and sure enough on the first road I guessed at, there it was! Still sitting in the same spot. What I didn't realize was that it hadn't moved in those two years. The girl who owned it had recieved the car as a present and it was the first and only car she had owned. Selling it was something she was very, very reluctant to do but after a couple of weeks my Dad met me there along with a tow truck driver and he became the owner of the car for a 3rd time. This time I am in a financial position to help him get her on the track again and we are making some progress.
We started on her in November of last year (2010) and she is currently at my mechanic's getting a new wiring harness grafted in with the old so the LS1 will mate with the car. It is getting a 4L60E with a 3,200 edge stall, Hawk's swap headers, Magnaflow cat-back, LS6 intake, PRC 5.3 stage 2.5 heads and a TSP Torquer v2 cam.
It's been a slow build so far. It is mostly ready for paint which will happen after she is running and dyno tuned. Then I think she will be gunmetal gray again but the decision has not been made for sure. Any ideas you all have about anything would be appreciated. She will also be getting 4th gen seats, maybe 4th gen dash, upgraded brakes and probably a 9 inch.

Re: New member with 89 GTA project OVRMYHD

get some subframe connectors on it if you already haven't. They are the best 200 dollar structural upgrade you can do to this car.

Hope you stick with the Gunmetal Gray. I think there was a limited edition of the Gunmetal Gray cars.

I'm leaning towards it. It just looks a little too dark to me on cloudy days. Maybe they could go a little heavier on the flake than stock?

Re: New member with 89 GTA project OVRMYHD

No special edition as far as the color goes but it was the lowest production color every year it was available (87-91) with the exception of 1987. In '87, the one year only Dark Russett was the lowest produced with Gunmetal the second lowest.

To me, Gunmetal is one of the best colors that was offered.
