Rare GTA?

Ran into a guy today at the local Car Show, had a black 1987 GTA with some strange options.

The air intake was like my 88, came from the side. not like 87's are supposed to be. it also had WS6 wheel nuts, i though they all had the Bird instead. also had no A/C or power windows, actually had manual windows, i didnt know that a GTA could come with that. Also no retractable hatch cover.

Forgive me if this is all normal but I thought it was pretty interesting.

It was also the 350 TPI Auto

Re: Rare GTA?

1987 was the only year where the GTA was basically an option package as opposed to a stand alone model. It was also the only year in which you could order options ala carte. Starting with the 88 model, the power options were all standard equipment on the GTA.
The center caps and lack of a cargo screen are easy enough to explain. The cargo screen was one of 3 options that were not available together with the 5.7 engine in 1987. The center caps could be swapped out at the owners discretion. 1987 was the only year for the bird caps so the WS6 caps would be easier to find if the originals were damaged or lost.
There were 2 option packages for the GTA. Power windows were standard in the W61 option package. Power windows and locks were standard in the W63 option package. Both could be deleted if a buyer chose not to have them.
The lack of AC is a little odd as it was standard in every option package across the Firebird line. The only way I can figure that you could get a GTA without AC would be to order one without either option package (W61/W63) which would mean the car would also be missing options like tilt wheel and cruise control as these were only available if you ordered one of the option packages and just added some individual options.
I would think a GTA without AC would be a pretty rare bird.

Re: Rare GTA?

There is a member on ThirdGen that has a 1987 GTA without A/C. It's from Canada. It's verified on the following SPID with the GTA code (Y84) and standard heater controls (C41) without the A/C code (C60).

Re: Rare GTA?

the guy isnt the original owner so Im not sure about the history. if it is a rare GTA hes already done a bunch of work to the motor so the collectable factor is gone.

Re: Rare GTA?

I do not think that just because he works on it does not mean it lowers the possible value level of it, unless the work that he is doing to it is modifying it.

That I think is not good. Because from what people have talked about, it is best to use a four bolt main type of engine to make a 383 out of a 350 than a two bolt main type of engine. I think most of the 350 original engines that came in the GTA were two bolt main type engines. Yes?

Re: Rare GTA?

My understanding Yumiko, is to take a two bolt main and put two more bolts in it splayed. That actually makes it stronger than a factory four bolt main. If he did that, it would be stronger than a corvette 'factory' four bolt main.

Normally the bolts are machined vertically in relation to the bearing. Splaying means you angle them toward the centerline of the rotating mass. That is supposed to make them stronger because they are angled more towards the stress point. Hope this helps.

Regards,

Ron.
