Duct Tape?

Behind my dash recently started smoking so I ripped it apart to figure out problem, Im noticing alot of wires spliced into eachother with black duct tape, is this normal from the factory? or did someone do this. Ive had car a couple months and noticed alot of splicing. thanks for the input

Cliff is right, the factory did not use duct tape. They usually use a vinyl electrical tape and I have seen a black tape that does look like duct tape, but it is used sparingly. If memory serves me right, this black tape is used to cover exposed metal terminals. If you actually have duct tape under there, you are following a clown/butcher job.

Thats what I thought, The place im finding the duct tape is where say 6 pink/black wires are splicing into 1 or 2 going the other way. there are two thicker orange/black wires splicing into 1.

That sounds like the factory black cloth backed tape and it is correct.

OK great, it for sure seems like its been there awhile, its real gooey when you touch it, it looked right cause all connections under it were soldered and had crimps on them, thanks for the input, now just have to figure out why its burning up, i found a black ground wire with the jacket completely melted.
