is it a gta?

alright im getting worried the more i read about the gta. I have an 87 TA i thought was a GTA. but i have vents in the front fenders, only a bird on horn of steering wheel and my map pocket says trans am. the good, my headlight pontiac lettering is gold, the bird in back is gold, i have the gold wheels.. my concerns. is the digital dash only on gtas. and there are no emblems on car anywhere. i ordered a report from phs but the wait is killing me.

Re: is it a gta?

With that much discrepancy, probably the only answer will be via the PHS report or if you have the SPID sticker located on the inside wall of the center console and it shows Y84.

You have so many mismatched parts that it's really a guess at this point.

The digital dash was optional on both Trans Am and GTA.

Here's some references located on the site for some authenticity checks:

Re: is it a gta?

Either way, It's still a nice car. I have a 86 6cylinder and I still enjoy driving it. I like the GTA better but It's a good car.

I've owned six cars in my life and still have 5 of them. I have been thinking about buying one more. A Chevy HHR with a turbo. I have not decided quite yet.

My advice is don't sweat it. Either way enjoy what you have. My suspicions are that it's a trans am. That is not a bad thing. You have all the options most GTA's came with already. If you absolutely have to have one then just try again, if this one turns out to not be one. Enjoy what you have. You can always use it for a parts car when you do get one. Put a hundred thousand on it and have fun. Good luck.

Regards,

Ron.

Hello neighbor..Unfortunately, I would guess with the vents in the front fenders that it's not a GTA. In any case a firebird of that year is still highly collectable...

Re: is it a gta?

I also suspect it's a regular trans am, either way enjoy it and if you really want a GTA then you could sell it and find one. Do you have any pictures of it?

Re: is it a gta?

Woaaaa Woaaa, hold on there.... Just because it has T/A parts doesn't mean it is and to loose hope! First off what motor does it have have? If it's a 350 TPI by all means dance with rejoice. If it's a 305 then you may still have to wait. Because it has no Emblems or decals I suspect the car was re-painted either for owners free will or collision repair. They may of had it painted to sell fastert too! Do you see any signs of being repainted? Some shops or high dollar paint jobs show no signs of it. Mostly to look for would be color mismatched, flaking, high orange peel, or even overspray. I think that if it may of had to have the fenders replaced it was owner preference to go with the vented ones. Unfortunate I have a guy here in our club that did this... he wants it to be "Custom" BTW the dash pouches are always so trashed it'f possible he replaced it as well from the car.

Check these out and see what you got. Look for the rear disc also!

Actually, the 350TPI was an optional engine for the Trans AM. It did not appear too common, but it was an option.

Re: is it a gta?

^ over 10 years experience with these, they do not exsist. No T/A was optioned with the 350TPI until 91-92. He still didn't tell us the motor size anyways lol!

However, in the 10 years I have also learned... No matter what the books and records indicated... it all depended on who you knew, how much money you had, and how long you wanted to wait.... and you could of had ANYTHING you wanted.

Hell, if you knew the right person! You could have a 92 Pink GTA if you wanted to wait for it!

they do exist. mine is one of 57 '90 TAs that came with the 5.7L engine (and pretty much all the other available performance options). Formulas did also.

They certainly do exist. A picture of an SPID sheet is worth a lot:

A 1987 Trans AM with 350 L98/B2L and no Y84 (GTA) code.

Also, per the work order sheets for 1987, this was certainly optional on the Trans AM without any special strings:

Not true.

Re: is it a gta?

^I have never seen an order sheet before! That's pretty sexy!

Like I said, I may obv be wrong... But in 10 years I have torn down, pulled parts, built, and met with hundreds of 3rd gens and NEVER once came across one except for a 91 T/A 350. Proven wrong, learn something new about these cars everyday! I have fallen out of the T/A community for so long even I'm forgetting someof the basic's. Last night I got into an argument with my roomie about I-roc's and Z28's lol. Sorry gentlemen, commence with the research.....

305 5-speeds are nice. Everything I own is manny trans except the 2 T/A's lol.
