Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

My 95 firebird with the 3.4 is showing extreme oil pressure loss. It has always said low oil on the dash but the gauge has always showed good pressure. Just one day it instantly dropped. When i start up its at 40 psi. Then when oil heats up, it drops to 10 psi when driving and 0 psi when at idle. With such a huge drop in one day could this be the sending unit?? If the bearings were bad wouldnt it slowly decrease in pressure?? please help this is my daily driver

It could be the sending unit. If you have an ohm meter, you can test to see if that's it, otherwise you may have to do the ole swap out and see method.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

The sending unit on the 3.4 is VERY easy to see and VERY easy to get to. Mine just went out on my '95 a few weeks ago. They're not expensive, but I think you need a special wrench to change it....like an O2 socket or such.

If you've been running all day with that kind of pressure, that's the likely culprit. It's on the underside, just to the driver's side of the oil pan. You can see it from the top, but it's easier to get to from the bottom. Should be silver and come out of the pan/block at a 45-degree angle from the bottom, just behind the crossmember.

Final note...really: You'll be able to see oil dripping out of it if it went. You won't even need a meter.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

Pretty much. I could smell the oil on the hot manifold and pressure dropped to red on idle, but jumped to 25 or so on acceleration. If your oil pressure had really dropped to zero, your engine would have locked up in 30 seconds.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

I was not aware of the engine locking up if it was really on zero, this brings good news considering my pressure seems to redline all the time now. I am still not hoping for the worst. Havent had time to look into it, been very busy the past week. If their is no oil coming from the sending unit do u suppose thats it probably fine?

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

You still need to change your sending unit. They're not expensive or hard to get to, but they will leak oil if you don't. It's just not a good idea to drive the car until you know the cause because the engine WILL lock up if the pressure is really zero...at BEST, you'll spin a bearing.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

You can replace ROD bearings by dropping the oil pan. Mains would require a complete rebuild. I just got done doing the timing chain on my '95, but didn't do the rod bearings. DO NOT drive the car until you get them done, though. Bearings are about $24 for all six sets.

Unbolt the motor mounts, lift the motor, drop the oil pan. Do NOT touch the bearings with your bare hands. Either have on gloves, or have your hands covered in oil or white lithium grease. The acids in your skin will eat away the bearings. While you're in there, replace the oil pump, too.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

for bearings I would highly recommend a full rebuild and proper cleaning of the block.

You don't know how worn the bearings are inside and how much metal is floating around in the oil system.

You may think you're saving a few pennies, but if you replace the bearings then put a rod through the block because a wrist pin pops shortly after you replace the bearings, now what?

When something internal fails, its like a transmission, you generally dont just fix the broken part and carry on. Theres usually more to it than just bad bearings. What caused the bearings to fail? What else is worn? etc...

thats my recommendation.

With time being a issue, how much would a shop charge to get this done??a rough estimate

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

for me, I had to get the crank reground when I popped the front 3 mains on my L98.

That took well over a month to get the part back because of the summer rush.

A shop, if they have all the parts, can probably get the engine pulled, dismantled, repaired and cleaned, reinstalled and running again in about a week(4-5 business days), given that there are no other priorities for them.

For my regrind and new bearings, that portion of the bill cost me about 1400 dollars CDN. This was when the USD was really good, would cost me 1.30-1.40 CDN to buy 1 USD.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

To JUST replace the bearings (and I agree with Merc on finding the cause and the rebuild if you can swing it...) will take a full day. That will take some of the metal out of the oiling system, but if you'd been driving it around, you may have done more serious damage. Replacing the bearings will buy you time, but how much is a crapshoot. It's maybe a day's labor plus the bearings. You'd probably be looking at about $600-700 IF you can find a shop that will do only the bearings. You can do it home if you have the right tools. You'd have to disconnect the motor mounts, lift the engine, and drop the oil pan.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

i got a large sum of money coming to me from my house closing and with my back issue from a previous wreck it is hard for me to work on my back. If u think a shop might do it for 600 to 700 I think it could be worth it for my sake. I am really curious though how much damage has been done. I guess ill have to find out...

How about trying that shop Autowise I believe is the name here in Indy. The one that has all the t.v. commercials. They will replace the old engine with another. Being that it's a V-6 it's not a collector car so it won't hurt the value of it. Won't take as long to fix. Maybe they will let you take the engine if they don't require a core charge. You can rebuild it yourself if you feel like it.

Re: Please help, low oil pressure in 95 firebird

I think any V6 Bird is worth just as much as a V8.

Look...Worthless?? I don't think so.

Get a shop to quote you for new bearings. It may not be as bad as I'm thinking, and you can keep the engine in it.

Never saying worthless. Just not a high value car. I love my 2000 Firebird. I've had it for 10 yrs and bought it brand new. Just not much value.
