GTA's dont get the respect!!!

I dont know about other magazines but.. I have every PHR (Popular Hot Rodding) from 1979 to 1995. And one day I took out all of my issues and let me tell ya theres alot but.. Not one article about a GTA . The only things close were the TTA pace car. But not a regular GTA. I am completely shocked and confused. Wheres the respect our cars should have. Has anyone seen a article about non TTA GTA's.. There were plenty of articles about the Iroc-z and z28. There was a article in 1993 bashing the third gen firebirds when the 4th gens were coming out. I own a 4th gen and yea they are a little nicer but the GTA needs more respect!! I will stop blabbing but put your input on why the GTA is in the shadow ( in my oppinion)

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

It's just the best-kept secret. It's OUR job to share the love and respect for these cars. I have NO problem explaining exactly what a GTA is to those who don't know...and Emma does the rest all by herself.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

Don't feel too bad. Here's what MotorWeek said about the '91 GTA on September 27, 1990:

240 HP, 340 lb-ft

0-60 mph in 6.3 1/4 mile in 14.9 @ 94 mph

60 - 0 mph in 117 ft

Base price $23,475 As tested $24,151

Hits: Power, Handling, Styling, Brakes

Nothing to be ashamed of there.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

Thats my look on it as well Thunder. The GTA is probably one of the best kept little secrets. They came out at a time when the thirdgen body style had already been 5 years old and everyone was sick of it i think. Not many people know what a GTA is. Back before I had my license I didn't know much about the GTA's. I did know of them, and I thought that just the name GTA sounded badass. Whenever I saw one on the street it was a big deal for me. This was even in a transitional period when I was drifting away from T/As and over into the Mustang side. I still remember about a week before I got my car I was sitting in front of a gas station and I saw a mint bright red 87 GTA pull in. The whole time it was there I just kept thinking what a hot car it was. I even remember saying aloud "Holy shit a GTA". This was a week before I was even thinking of getting a car in general, I didn't even know my car existed.. As soon as I walked through the door at home I told my dad how awesome that GTA looked, and he told me the GTA was the one car hes always wanted but never got to own.. Then I think about a week later we picked up my car..

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

One other thing i've noticed over the years is that the car magazines tend to bash earlier generations once the latest and greatest version comes out.

The 1984 Corvette was praised as the greatest car the world had ever seen when it first came out. Wasn't long before the magazines started finding fault.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

I have seen them in old magazines (which some of them I only saved the articles only) but these articles are from when the GTAs were first coming out for sale.

Since perhaps 1990, I have not seen any articles at all, but also I do not regularily look at automobile magazines, so maybe I missed them. I do still have a Japanese car magazine with a GTA in it. They had an article in each month for a whole year about the progress of a GTA restoration project in Japan. I just kept the very first issue and did not get the other eleven issues. It was an 1990 GTA that they were restoring.

I also agree with thunderchicken about our gta's being the secret to how amazing they are. And I also know very little amount of people who know what GTA's are. It makes it even that much more exciting i suppose.. And hearing all of ur replies to my post I have a better understanding..its good that GTA didnt get the publicity that other cars did..

You guys think you've got it rough, try owning a Formula and having everyone tell you how nice your Trans Am is! My personalized tag reads "NOTA-T/A" for that reason.

Or worse, when I had my Formula and every third turd would say 'Nice Camaro, man!"

That is grounds for justifiable manslaughter.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

This has nothing to do with my GTA or anyone elses but it does prove how stupid people are. I had a 1972 GTO, 400 ra4 motor, m22 rock crusher 4 speed trans, 4:11 posi rear etc etc. Now we all know GTO was a pontiac, well, I went into my local parts store (Pep Boys) and asked the guy behind the counter for valve cover gaskets for my GTO. He looks at me and says "Who makes that, thats a FORD right?". I was shocked and said never mind, I'll get em somewhere else. I went to Napa and they knew my GTO was a Pontiac.
Everyone, except the true gearheads or Pontiacs fans still call my car a Firebird also, so dont feel bad guys/gals.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

When I moved here in Kingman, Arizona, I figured that everyone would call my car the usual, Camaro, Firebird, etc.
But boy, was I surprised when everyone knew pretty much what my car was.
And how fast.
The older musclecar guys refuse to street race me.
Including a few Corvette guys.
Well, it does keep me out of trouble.
Some of the time.

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

I work at a place that has security guards in the parking area. One told me my Viper was very cool and in nice shape We have someone who works here that drives a blue viper so I guess my black GTA confused them

Re: GTA's dont get the respect!!!

I haven't had that problem with people confusing my 91 so far. Everyone knows it's a GTA and I only call it "the GTA" when I talk about it or refer to it.
My 87 was a different story because I removed all of the emblems. I still get people that ask me "what happened to that camaro" and dumb crap like that.

I call my GTA(or should I say my grandson, lol) calls it the birdy-bird,lol.... Me I dont really care anymore. It has been called many things, some good, and some bad. The only thing that matters to me, is the joy I get from driving it.
