292 for my truck

i have the opportunity to got a free 292 stright 6 for my 79 truck. i had not even herd of this motor before i got this offer so i don't know much about them. does anyone have any experence with them? i woundering on reliability with it more than performance. the truck currently has a 250 in it that works alright, but its a pig on gas. i thought about going with a 350 or 305, witch i have one of each, but it seems like thats what everyone has done and a 292 is quite different. any thoughts?

Re: 292 for my truck

If you already have a 350 then go for that. I really wouldnt care what anyone else is doing, You wont be happy with a 6 cylinder in a truck..

Re: 292 for my truck

no we didn't, unfortunately we took too long to get it and the guy junked the motor. we decided to rebuild the 250 that was in it and discovered a crack in one of the cylinder, so we dropped in a 305 and now it runs awesome.

Re: 292 for my truck

the trucks a 79 and the motor came out of a 84. it did have a computer controled carb on it but we put a regular q jet on it. with the 4 speed bull low tranny thats in it, its got plenty of power for what we use it for. can't wait till all the body works finished to get it out and really see how the old girl really runs.

Sorry. Apologies first. Even though not a GTA question, why are you looking at a 292? Do you want torque, gas mileage..etc.?

I have a '80 GMC 3/4 ton 454/4-speed, 4 bbl carb and headers.

Won't even think about going beyond that.
