should i have drums ?

Hi guys,

just joined up. Ive got a 1987 GTA (i hope!) and im just wondering if they came with drum brakes ? every other person i know with a GTA has discs on the back, however mine is the only 87.

When i got the car nearly all of the interior had been gutted for a knight rider conversion so ive got no RPO codes, or stickers anywhere which has always been frustrating.

Its got a 10 bolt LSD rear axle that much i do know.

Re: should i have drums ?

Your best bet is to get a copy of the invoice. In 1987, the GTA could be anything from just the badges, to the full package. The best way to tell from just a look is the fenders. If they have the air vents in them, it's probably a Trans Am (unless those got changed for the conversion). If not, it's probably a GTA.

The invoice (done according to your VIN number) will be your best bet for finding out what you have and what equipment SHOULD be there.

Welcome to the site!!!

Re: should i have drums ?

I've got a 91 with drums. The only trans am I ever owned that had 4 wheel disc was an 84 go figure.

Re: should i have drums ?

Thanks for the welcome

The fenders didnt have vents in, they were the original fenders. I carried on with the knight rider conversion though so they were replaced with a set i got from an 84 with the correct vents in.

Ive seen pictures of my car before i bought it when it was still in its original state and it was a lovely example, i know a lot of GTA cloning goes on over in the states but over here its very rare, most of us are just happy to have a nice 3rd gen

mine has the 305 TPI, non digital dash, t-tops and electric everything. How do i get a copy of the original invoice then, is that through pontiac historic services ive heard of ?

Don't know if this works for '87s but you may be able to get some RPO info here using your VIN:

Re: should i have drums ?

Barring parts shortages, the main precursor to determining whether or not a GTA was equipped with rear drum brakes was the engine selection. In my experience, this is the breakdown I've seen that played out:

5.7L - rear discs
5.0L/5-speed - rear discs
5.0L/A4 - rear drums

For 1991, there were some parts shortages and availability problems with the rear discs, so it was not uncommon for 5.7L cars to get them in that instance. See the main site under Pontiac F-Car Car Distribution Bulletins for more complete info.

Re: should i have drums ?

I think the 87 I saw was a very rare car. It was a 350 car with t tops and aluminum rear drums. It was sitting in a junkyard outside of carrollton, ohio.

My '88 305/A4 has rear discs.

Re: should i have drums ?

Both of my GTA'S are discs all round. However, a 1987 Trans Am i saw at the wreckers (also had the C&C T-tops) - 305 and Auto, had drums in the rear. So, to follow Frankie's lead - if the GTA was an option package in 1987 and with parts, etc. perhaps an issue, and given GM...........would it be a surprise?

On the second part, as has been said so many times, Y84 tells it all - discs or drums.

Re: should i have drums ?

You can get the 1LE parts off hawks fairly cheap to upgrade the brakes all the way around

Re: should i have drums ?

Just an FYI, in some years the disc/drum setup was referred to by code as WS7, but I don't know for certain if that code was ever used on a GTA or not. I have seen Trans Ams that had it on the SPID label, bit it does not show in my RPO code book to be used during our model years.
