Re: Vortech Supercharger

quick question, how big is the supercharger and how much boost do you plan on running? what gains do you expect?

here is a link to info on the vortech V-3:

http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/view.php?pcat=26

i plan to run only 5-7 psi of boost at least initially.

Vortech claims you gain ~95 HP and 90 lb-ft which would take our
cars to about 340 HP and 430 lb-ft.

and the vendor says i can re-clock it for proper orientation but i'm going to verify that won't affect the warranty.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

the flat head bolt that holds the SC bracket in place was about 3/16" too long and bottomed
out in the hole in the head. the local fastener store had the same style bolt but they were out
of the length i needed so i had to take my dremel to the one that came with the kit.
had to take the fuel lines off and bend them also.

took about 5 minutes to reclock the supercharger. six allen head bolts. you can rotate it in 45 degree increments.

make sure you carefully bend and route the power steering lines UNDER the SC mounting bracket or you will be doing some disassembly (ask me
how i know )

had a clearance problem between the supercharger body and the power steering lines. the install manual says to leave the lines connected and just bend
them but i'm not sure that's practical. a photo of how they bent and routed the ps lines around the SC bracket would have been real helpful.

how much of a hassle is it to flush/refill/bleed the power steering system? i probably should get some new fluid in there anyway.

oh well, won't be able to finish it now anyway until Vortech sends me the pulley for the supercharger shaft.
Sorry to hear you ran into a wall with the installation. I hope vortech will work with you on solving the problem. I cant wait untill you finish this project its so exciting especially because its in my wish list. I hope you finish soon so we can all see how great it will turn out. Not to mention the sound of that supercharger blowing. with a video i hope Well im sure everyone will agree with me we are all routing for you. good luck

how fast is your car now? i imagine it made a pretty big difference.

just a note that vortech recommends a heated garage or a block heater if you plan to drive your car at temps below 25 F due to close tolerances. won't affect me as i don't drive mine in the winter but anyone thinking about it should be aware of it.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

Did you 87 come with a serpentine set up? Mine does not.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

88-92 came with serpentine setup
82-87 was vbelt
You can easily convert if you get the serpentine idler system and pulley frames for the alternator, AC, smog and power steering pump.

wonder why they'd suggest a block heater when that would do nothing for the supercharger itself. any other explanation other then tolerances?

Looking at your picture...does you filter suck in hot air? Can't see that as being good for power gain since everyone is looking for cold air. Just curious.

that's the only explanation they give. the warning is on the first page of the street SC owners' manual:

Re: Vortech Supercharger

If you got the ram air hood, and were able to route the intake to the ram air box...that'd give you a pretty good cold air setup for it.

Or, just go with the dual intercooler setup that is similar to the one that ATI uses for their procharger kit. Lots of air plumbing to work with though...

Re: Vortech Supercharger

Still waiting for Vortech to send the supercharger pulley and correct size idler pulley spacer. Meanwhile decided how/where to put the boost gauge:

http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s...e/100_1417.jpg

Shouldn't take more than a few more hours to wrap up the install.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

Re: Vortech Supercharger

yes i considered the pillar pod holders but decided I didn't want to put it there.

didn't want to put it in the heating/cooling vents as it would be too far from field of vision. didn't want to drill any holes in the interior. easy to move/remove this way. just need to hook up the ground wires for the gauge and gauge light and tie into the lighting and power circuits at the fuse box.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

let me know which colour wire you attach the lights onto. I've been having trouble with my own gauges sucking the power out of the battery as I wasnt sure which colour wire to attach to. I tried the white ones with no success.

Re: Vortech Supercharger

Funny you should ask as i was just working on wiring up my boost gauge and aux fuel pump ten minutes ago.

For my initial boost gauge light hookup I am going straight to the contacts in the pass. compartment fuse box that are next to the 25A wiper fuse (toward the outside of the car). This contact seems to work with the rest of the factory light switches.

For grounds i'm using one of the screws that holds the fuse box in place.

I put power to my Walbro aux fuel pump in the engine compartment to check for leaks. It is very loud. Is that normal????

AutoMeter recommends using a fuse in the power lead for the gauge itself. You'd think they could include that with a gauge that normally sells for $180+ on Ebay??? (i got mine for $100 shipped).

Off to Autozone for a fuse holder and to get the Optima battery for my Subaru tested. It's only 2-1/2 years old but looks like either it's failing or the 6-yr old alternator is as I had to get a jump start earlier today.

Changed out the heater core on my Honda - now it won't start. Continuity checks on the ignition switch indicate it needs replaced so have one on order.

Getting kind of tired of working on my cars!!!!

Re: Vortech Supercharger

whoa, yes it is.

The Walboro is noisy. When I power my car on it and it primes the fuel rails it a loud PSSSSSHH and then a click. Its pretty crazy.

And my battery I think is toast, we'll see how this works after an overnight charge.

I thought that they recommended you put the pump towards the back, even if you have one in the tank.
