Re: TTA Notch back?

No, not official. Yes, the car has a notchback decklid but it was not produced that way.

The 20th T/A cars were produced in the early spring of 1989, IIRC..... (George?) while the notchback option disappeared in August of 1988. I have discussed this photo with Lou Wassel and some others in recent months.

The picture's validiity is not in question. Apparently there were some of these decklids floating around Pontiac Engineering, and they were used on different models as one-off styling exercises, etc. But somebody obviously took the time to take that car to Indy.... so maybe it was considered for production at some point? Would have been a cool addition, IMO.

Re: TTA Notch back?

I wonder if that's the reason that the TTA's got the notchback seats, just in case they decided to do the Notchback. I remember seeing some actual literature from Pontiac with a picture of a TTA with a notchback on it.

Re: TTA Notch back?

I wonder what ever happened to this car. Decklid swapped out, and sold "regular"?

It would be neat to identify, the SPECFIC VIN of the car in that pic, amd put a notchback lid on it.

I do notice, the door decal placement on that car, is "wrong", according to the decal placement instructions.

Re: TTA Notch back?

I do know that production for the 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Ams started in Nov of '88.
As for the story of that TTA photo at Indy, word has it it was done there. Not sure of the reason.
Might have something to do with the high end speed testing they did at the track. Or maybe something about the cameras that were installed on the pace cars.
I do know that they clocked a TTA at the Indy track at 172 mph, with no mods.
I also have video of the pace cars (well, 2 of them, they even had the wipers going) running the track in the rain.
Ya, never seen rain........................................

Thanks, George.... I stand corrected on the build date. I knew if anyone would know, you'd be the go-to guy.

Re: TTA Notch back?

I always wondered if the decal placement was done wrong to just one car or more than one because of these pics showing the notchback TTA and hatchback TTA's with the same decal placement. Also George, could this car/cars have been one of the pilot cars there for publicity photo's? That could date these photo's earlier than 11/88

Re: TTA Notch back?

HOLY CRAP! Steve, thanks for that color shot of the Notchback TTA.... that is outstanding!

I'm about to give up on the debate on decal placement deal.... and the claim that the car was not a "real" TTA. If the dang photo has the Indy logo on it, well.... Does anybody have any footage from that race to see if the car in question was used in any on-track capacity?

George's comment about camera mountings might be a feasible one....

Re: TTA Notch back?

Steve,
I really don't know what happened to the Pilot cars when construction on the production cars started.
I know that Pontiac sent out the festival cars to Indy, but I believe that the Pilot cars were owned by PAS, so I doubt that they would have been sent with the production cars.
But who knows when the photos were taken.
Anything is possible.
It sure would have been nice to have been able to hang around back then.
I also know that Pontiac had the festival cars there at least a month before the race.
This let people who work with Indy (and radio stations, Indy team owners, and Indy officals and others) drive the cars before the race, that way to give out good comments on the race. In other words, free advertizing.
I also would have loved to have been able to read newspapers from there, a whole month before the race.
The problem with most races on TV, is that they don't show all the little/big parades that go on.
Remember that video I showed you?
It had parades with the Indy Race Princesses, and it even had James Garner being driven around in a 20th TTA.
That stuff doesn't make races filmed for TV viewing.
Too bad, I would love to see all that.
I do know the the 1989 Indy Yearbook shows some 20th TTA parked out in the parking lots for the race.
I do know that the Pontiac West Coast Zone Office told me that I got the first one released to the Public, and I got mine on April 1st, 1989.
I would love to see documation on the release date, or if anyone else got their car on the same day, or before.
For people intrested in 20th TTAs, go to http://www.turbotransam.com
There is even a registry on these cars there, and a disscussion on vins.

Re: TTA Notch back?

Sorry,
I don't have it on my computer or CD/DVD.
I have it on an in-house VHS tape from Pontiac direct.

Re: TTA Notch back?

It's not called anything, it's a in-house Pontiac video, given to me by Pontiac direct, when I bought my 20th TTA new.
In-house means that it wasn't made for Public view. I doubt it was even viewed by dealerships.

Re: TTA Notch back?

Ha!
I have so much stuff from Pontiac.
It helped that I had met and dealt with some people high up in Pontiac at that time.
Quite a few people have left, and gone other places, like SEMA, or got higher positions in GM. Or, retired.
I have two casstettes of the original Pontiac music, "We build excitement".
One version is "We build excitement".
I was told back then, not to make or sell any copies.
I wonder if there is a time limit on stuff like this.
I even have some second gen Trans Am/Firebird/Pontiac decals that never made production.
When the fourth gens came out, GM had reoriganized, and moved the West Coast Zone Office further away from me.
Big bummer.
Heck, I've got some cool stuff from the Van Nuys Assembly Plant even.
Firebird 500 (early thirdgen Firebirds sold in SoCal at the time) key fobs (metal), and a triangle kinda like a swiss arm knife, with the Van Nuys plant logo on it, with the Firebird/Camaro stamping.
All this is why I have so many friends. They all want everything I have.
And why people are always visiting me.

I'll try to dig some of this out this weekend to take some pictures.
Some of it is displayed in my glass display cases.

Hmm...gimme a sec I've got this, really. <tapping finger on chin> Man, I just had it too and I can't remember what it was. Hmm...nope. Nothing. I don't really have anything cool for my GTA...at least not yet.
