Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

well my dad has been a certified mechanic for over 25 years...... he's had and worked on a 76 vette 71 gto, 69 mustang fastback, plymouth satellite and now a camaro rs for my brother and a 88 trans am gta for me..... whenever we have problems not only does he fixes it.. its all free..... we are just lucky to have a mechanic as a father...lol... when he fixes our cars i like to see what he does so oneday i can work on my GTA myself...... he can fix and rebuild anything cause he is rebuilding my 700r4 to be better and stronger than the newer 460le trannies by adding a transgo shift kit, vette servo and shaving down certain clutches.....

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

ask him to add additional clutches into the 3-4 clutchpack as well as the 1-2 clutch packs.

The transgo stage 2 kit should come with the vette servo and larger boost valve.

Add in an external transmission cooler as well and you'll be on the safe side

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

yeah he is redoing the whole transmission..... i think he has like .500 boost valve or sumthing like that.... we already have the vette servo in the tranny.... i really want this tranny to handle the new power of the modified l98 engine and keep the power to the ground cause the stock 700r4 sucks and has sluggish shifts......

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

It will be nice to have a stronger 700R4. I have always driven my GTA very responsibly and yet my original transmissions has had to be rebuilt two times now. I just do not understand why my GTA transmissions stop working even though I drive my GTA nicely. So if you can have yours rebuilt to last longer, that is great. One thing I want to know is, if you alter the transmissions, will that affect the accuracy of the speedometer? And also, the computer chip in the car is set up for a specific transmissions performance. Would this altercation to the transmissions have any impact on the computer of the car? Yumiko

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

no not at all... according to my dad....... as far as the computer chip for specfic transmisson performance we dont know..... we dont think so because the transmission is not really controlled by the computer unlike the 460le...... when he added the stage 2 transgo shiftkit and corvette servo... man it shifted hard..... not only did i feel the stronger quicker shifts but when you manually shift from 1 to 2 to 3 the car seems to be so much quicker.. you can actually feel the car shifting... its hard to explain but he did the transmission in such a way that it seems like i can reach 0-60 much quicker now, just with the built up tranny...... my dad said that when he is done with this tranny, it would be nearly impossible for a manual car to keep up with me from a stop......

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

To answer your questions Yumiko, the ECM on a 700R4 has no impact over the shift points on your transmission, this is done by the kick down cable that is connected to the throttle body.

In the later models of the 700R4, now known as the 4L60E(e for electronic) the transmission has it's own computer to calculate the shift points based off data from the engine rpm, speed, throttle position etc from the engine ECM.

If you modify your transmission to have harder shifts, this does absolutely nothing to the speedometer accuracy. The only time this is changed is when you change the tire size, change your rear output gears or swap in an incorrect speedometer gear into the transmission.

The possible cause of your GTA's transmission failure is heat which is one of the major causes of transmission failure. 700R4s run very hot with generally high line pressure which causes a lot of friction. It won't hurt to install an inline transmission cooler.

And I bet you any money there wildbird, he's dropping in a higher stall torque converter for you to give you a little more oomph from the get go.

It would work, but I doubt seriously that it would be any better than what you have already.

I went from the stock 1800 to a 2600, mileage dropped from 225mi/tank to 180mi/tank

Sounds like my own GTA gas mileages when they started to put in the MTEB stuff in the fuel. I went from 245 miles per full tank to 180 miles per full tank right away.

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

I have a 2200-2600 stall from TCI and my fp reg set at 50 psi and the timin at 12+ degreezzzzz, my last tank netted right at 20mpg. so that calculates into around 255 mpg on a tank of gas. Alot will depend on that rt foot. If its real heavy then no matter what you do you mpg will not be good. hth

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

you are supposed to match your stall to your cam.
2100-2400 will be a good match up with the powermax cam.

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

yeah then i will just go with a factory tpi vette converter... also i have another question.... since we are going this far we are gonna rebuild the engine..... could i buy a 383 conversion kit for my l98. how hard is that... cause i see like a conversion kit with all the pistons and crankshaft for around 800 dollars..... would this kit work with the rest of the car/computer and would i see a increase in horsepower with my factory tpi and intake system....

Re: My GTA is in the Shop...

Yes, you can either a.) get a stroker kit and build one or b.) buy a complete 383 short or long blk assy with heads and all. It will just depend on how much $$$ you have as to how far you can go.
