Re: 383

Munson what is the difference between the first kit you posted originally from CNC and the second one in the last set you posted? Also, I talked with the guy I'm getting the heads from and he said that he was doing them just enough to removed the scratches.

the only real difference is the pistons. the first kit comes with a flat top piston and will have your compression pretty high, too high for pump gas. the second kit in the last set of kits i posted is an inverted dome piston that will work with pump gas no problem. i'm not sure if you could get the first kit to work even with a thicker head gasket. there are some really thick head gaskets offered by summit racing though. maybe you could contact CNC, and ask them what size gasket you would need to get the flat top piston kit to work with your heads on pump gas. if you want to just stick with a stock size gasket, just get the inverted dome kit and you'll be good with the .038 thickness and your heads as they are. you'll be able to run 93 pump gas with a decent tune up to 11:1 or so since you're using aluminum heads.

Re: 383

You can also, that is if you decide on the one with higher compression, get a cam with a split duration and wide LSA, kinda like a nitrous cam, but it will allow you to run the higher compression. What it does is hold the exhaust valve open longer so you can lower your compression. Comp Cams has a variety of theses cams they are called Xtreme Energy Cams and you can go to compcams.com to see what I am talkin about. The ZZ-9 cam from TPis is a good example of waht I am talkin about. hth

Re: 383

even with a cam like that, i doubt he'd be able to run that flat top kit with pump gas. it says 11.7:1 with 58cc heads and his will be around 56 or 54 probably with the milling job. maybe if he uses a cam like that and a really thick head gasket.

Hmmm yeah good point, of coarse with the right tunin he would be a killer set up. I used to run a 400 sbc w/ al,ost that much compr and I just keot the timin down low around 32 total and the fp up and I was good to go.

AND I jsut thought of somethin, Patrick if you run that flat top piston you may have to fly cut your piston in order to have room between the valve and the piston.

In addition to the kit of course is there anything else that I would need. Munson, Jamie should be able to hook me up with a good chip for all of this, right?

Re: 383

That should be about it. When you start puttin the motor I would definitely check the clearance on the valve to piston and make sure you have enough.

definitely look into the piston to valve clearance as cliff mentioned when putting it together. jamie can tune the new setup for you no problem. he tuned a 383 hsr motor yesterday that made like 335/370's and it still had an issue with it. once the guy gets the problem figured out, it's going to make close to 350 at the rear tires. are you going to run the LTR setup or another intake? he should have some tunes saved from when he was dyno tuning my buddy matts car. it's a 383 with TFS heads, LTR setup. he made somewhere around 315/420 to the tires with the setup. 420 rwtq will put you back into the seat like you wouldn't imagine.

Re: 383

I'll be having someone else put the motor together for me. I don't know enough about it and I'm not daring enough to spend all of this money to mess something up. As for the intake, I'm using the Edelbrock high-flo TPI baseplate that I just bought with the SLP runners. Those of course will be hooked up to the L98 heads. BTW he didn't mill them, but I am going to have them checked before they get put on the car to be sure. It's not that I don't trust this person, but it is the first time I've done business with them so I just want to be very sure before they go onto the car. I'd kind of like this motor to last me a little while.

Re: 383

I'm really looking forward to getting the car back on the road. Now if the finances would cooperate with me that would be a different story. Looks like I'm going to have to buy parts a little at a time until I can get just about everything I need then get it done. That way I don't have to front everything all at once.

one thing to remember, those stroker kits on ebay i showed you don't come with a gasket kit. you're looking at another 150 or so for a tpi gasket kit.

Re: 383

Thanks Munson. What kind of gaskets do y'all reccomend?

As for the smile, Cliff...the goal is to throw a few suprises at the GenIV folks. I'm not concerned with whether or not I can beat them or stomp a whole in rears...just get a little GenIII respect from them. Most especially using an old dinosaur L98 in the car. I really look forward to seeing exactly what kinds of numbers my car puts down with the new upgrades.
