Catalytic Converters

I want to replace the catalytic converters on my car. It is a 1989 with the Dual Catalytic Converter exhaust. What do you guys think is the best replacement for better performance and best fit? I think the diameter needed is 2.25 inches (my car is over 3000 kms away so I can't measure it)

I am thinking about the Magnaflow Universal Fit High Flows with the air tube

Thanks,

Justin

Re: Catalytic Converters

Do you have to have emissions? If not, pull 'em

I understand it is nice to save some money, but when you purchase these cheaper catalytic converters that are not made by GM, they are much smaller then the original ones that you are replacing and the non-GM ones do not have the same bracket that is for connecting/supporting the catalytic converter to the transmission.

That is what happened in my situation with my GTA, the mechanic charged me full price ($300+) for the cheap $50 replacement one, then could not install it unless he left on the original one for support and because the replacement one was nearly only half as long as the original one. Refresher photograph of what they did to mine in 1995 is attached below.

So you either will need to have your exhaust system altered so a different type can be installed, or search to find one that is the exact size as the original, or just go to GM and get it from them. Yumiko

Re: Catalytic Converters

Thanks for replying,

It looks like il have to get the OEM direct Fit system from the manifolds back to the intermediate pipe. Yumiko, thanks for mentioning that about the support bracket as I would not have thought about it.

Now the only choice to make is whether to buy Catco or Eastern, Apparently Eastern flows better then stock. I like the Dual Converter option but, it isnt cheap to replace

Has anyone here used any Eastern Products?

Re: Catalytic Converters

Yumiko whatever shop that did that are a bunch of complete morons. With a little cutting and welding they could of cut out the old cat welded the new one in and welded some new pipe in to make it the length needed. It looks like they were just lazy and didnt want to take the time to do it the right way.
