Aussie member

Hi Guys, I have been lurking around for ages, but I have just bought myself a 1988 GTA. These are a very rare car in Australia, even a normal Trans Am is pretty rare. My car is white and has been converted to RHD (since you guys drive on the wrong side lol). It is a 305 but it is a T-Top It's basicly stock except for the exhaust, it has no cat and a 2.5in system. It's loud but not ott. I also have a 1978 Holden sandman panelvan with a 454 in it. That is a bit ott.........I look forward to chatting with you guys and picking your brains on these cars a bit.

Re: Aussie member

Welcome aboard. It seems that the majority of the GTAs that were exported were white. I saw a few white ones in Japan and also some members from Europe have photographs of their GTAs posted here and they are also white. Interesting, I wonder why. I know in Japan they are very strict with car colors (or at least they used to be long ago pre-1990s.)

Well, just wanted to welcome you to this site, I like your cars. I do not know what that other orange one is, but it seems like it is a classic of some kind. G'Day mate....Yumiko

Re: Aussie member

My GTA isn't an export model, they were never officially sent to Australia. All the ones here are private import. The orange/red car is a 1978 HZ Holden Sandman Panelvan. HZ Holdens came in a sedan, station wagon, a ute (a lot like an elcamino), a trayback we call a one tonner, and the panelvans. The sandman was the hotted up model, it had stripes and stuff. It orginally had a 4.2L (253) V8 or they could also be had with a 5.0L (308) V8. Google them, we have quite a history of muscle cars here in Oz, just they are mostly 4 door and we never stopped building them, we never went front wheel drive for our large cars and you could always get a large V8 in them.

The Panelvan looks like the one they used on Mad Max.

I love the RHD conversions. I wish I could convert my GTA to RHD. It'd flip people out around here!

Here's my home built Flamethrowers.

Here's a pic from last years skidpan day with my car club, the eastside cruisers.

And here's my tailshaft after 4 runs.....

Re: Aussie member

We made something pretty close to like that for my GTA about eight years ago. Mine is made out of oak wood and it is only for storing stuff neatly, not for any stereo stuff like what you did. Actually Frankie has photographs of what I had made, I had submitted them when I submitted photographs for the spotlight.

The cover on mine is thin so there is no problem if there is a time where I need to remove the spare minispare tire from the side compartment. I am unsure how much your cover is sticking up, if that may be an issue for you or not. But I do like the red Trans Am logo that you have in the glass center piece. That is a very nice idea. Yumiko

Re: Aussie member

It is easy to get the cover off to get to the spare, I just don't have the bottom screw in it. The Trans Am logo did come out pretty good, but it is really hard to get a good photo of it. I used mirrors, so at night you get about 10 reflections of the logo.

Re: Aussie member

We did the same thing with my GTA, with the two bottom plastic bolts not used. But what I am wondering is if you are able to remove the spare tire with that piece there. In my situation, mine barely fit where the rim would not rub on the door. Mine sort of looks like yours does but mine does not have any speakers. It is just a piece of oak wood which we sanded and varnished to sort of match the interior colors. It turned out very nice and is very neat for storing the things. Only problem I do not like is if I need to change a rear taillight bulb. Ads a lot more work to doing it, and it is already a lot of work to change those bulbs. Yumiko

Re: Aussie member

No, I've never been to the USA, but one day maybe I have seen your posts on the aussie site too, and leigh seems like a good bloke, I have only chatted with him over the net however, as he lives about 1000kms from me . btw, those are some really nice cars you have there, I am very jealous that you guys in the USA can find these cars without too much hassle. Over here we have very few to choose from, although they are mostly pretty well looked after here as they are worth more and are really only an enthusiests car.
