Re: Tail light center section

I'll snap a picture of mine when I'm back home this coming weekend. Came off a 1987 TA and the reflective strip have not been replaced or anything like that.

For the bird emblem, GM had the gold on the GTA, there where silver birds, orange birds and also blue birds all identical to the GTA version but in different colors ...

Re: Tail light center section

Not quite. The reflective strip loks the same, so possibly they were swapped, but 3 previous owners have no knowledge of it. Look at the pic in my first post, that started this thread.

Re: Tail light center section

I looked at mine again(I've been away, and it's dark, and rainy again), and mine has the lettering in the middle section, but not on the bumper cover.

Is the lens on yours smooth like the GTA ones (in my pic), or ribbed (like the eBay one) like the earlier ones?

I've gone back and forth, thinking of switching out my center section, for one that doesn't have , the PONTIAC lettering, or smoothing the rear bumper cover. Obviously, switching the center section would be cheaper and easier, the most likely choice, will be switching center sections. I think it looks overkill, a bit gaudy, to have the brand name on there twice, 6" apart.

Re: Tail light center section

I would agree that having it say Pontiac within six inches a part is bad taste. I would vote to remove the center piece and put the correct one back on there. Covering over the bumper Pontiac letters is not right and would most likely crack under stress and heat. It takes special flexible materials in the bumper covers. I had both of mine fixed the right way by shipping them to a company that specializes in that type of repairs. There were small chips and chunks missing from mine because of all the jerky people who squeezed in their cars in front and in back of my car when parking in the busy San Francisco City. Chrome metal bumpers will ruin these GTA bumper covers very quickly in this situation. What they used sort of looks like it was really thick like what comes from a heated glue gun and when it dries, it is like the same material as the bumper cover is. So I think the eastiest and smartest way to take care of this is to just get the correct center piece for your GTA. But then again, I just base my opinions and suggestions on simply resorting to how it came new from the assembly plant. Yumiko

Re: Tail light center section

Well, filling the urethane lettering with new urethane is not THAT big of a deal, but given 15 min, and zero cost of swapping centers, the choice becomes obvious.

Re: Tail light center section

Well, so much for swapping them out. I pulled the one off the 89, and the mount leg on one side is busted in two. I don't trust it to stay together.

I thought about just swapping the reflective strips, but judging by the adhesive oozed out, it would break before seperating. So, I don't really see how they were switched, on my 87 GTA.

Re: Tail light center section

My car has the ribbed tail lights.
I'm pretty sure that my bumper hasn't been filled in, as the rest of the body work that the previous owner did is all fairly obvious. I don't know if the rear bumper has been replaced, but I doubt that too. If the previous owner was going to replace pieces, then the front section would have been replaced, too.

Re: Tail light center section

Cool. That makes the second one in existanse I've been able to find!

Was the bumper embossed, with the PONTIAC lettering, on the car that came off of?

Re: Tail light center section

That must be from a different year of Pontiac then what a GTA would be. I bet that was earlier 1980s third generation model. But then again, perhaps it is from an export model that is non-GTA. The bird emblem is missing, if it was there we would be able to see if it was a gold one or some other color. Yumiko

Re: Tail light center section

It looks IDENTICAL to mine, just with the 'bird emblem removed, that's all. Go look at yours, and imagine the emblem pulled out. You'd be left with the same thing.

It's just missing the emblem, which is just sticky taped on anyways. You can just make out the outline in my pic, which is the same as all other GTAs, for them emblem.

Re: Tail light center section

I looked up on e-bay 1984 and 1985 firebird and I see many with the same center piece, except the Pontiac has silver paint on the lettering, which could possibly be removed by polishing or using some sort of cleaner. So it could be a possibility that whoever owned your GTA before you did, may have put the older style one on and removed the paint from the raised lettering. Yumiko

Re: Tail light center section

Pray tell...Where Yumiko? I searched and the only thing I found, was the early ribbed style, that had the PONTIAC on the reflective strip.

Re: Tail light center section

Here's mine, it's the original piece

'84 was the last year for the ribbed taillights, starting in '85 they got the taillights that we are all accustomed to (the grid ones) but not for sure if the '85's had the letters on the strip.

Yours is a 87, but it appears to have the 86-style 3rd brake light, and the 91/92 wing. Did you change them?

Re: Tail light center section

It has a hatch off of a '92 Formula and a spoiler I bought off of e-bay which is the '91-92 model style.

Re: Tail light center section

That's right...I saw the upper rear brake light, and didn't pay attention. Yours is the internal(91/92), not external (86) style.

I ment to say that the ones with the strip with Pontiac on them are on ebay. The reflective strip on the bottom portion are fairly simple to remove. In the past I had got parts here and there, some broken in this place and some broken in that place and took the good parts and made one good one out of them. But then I sold all of that stuff and just got new parts from the dealership that are immaculate.

So removing just the reflective strip from one and putting it on the other can be done with a little bit of patience, tools and knowledge. Yumiko
