Question repair manuals

Does anyone know where the best place online to buy a repair manual for just the GTA?or are they all for firebirds in general?

Thanks, Ray

You can get either a Haynes or Chilton repair manual specific for the 3rd Gen Firebird/TransAm 1982-1992 from your local auto part store.

But what you really should get (just my recommendation) is the GM original service manual for your specific year from Helm Inc who makes them for GM. You can order on line @ www.helminc.com and why not get a new owners manual etc as well.

The GM manuals are slightly expensive but well worth the money. Contains every info you might need.

Got my Helms from www.ebay.com Do a search on Firebird Manual and look for an '88. Haven't looked to see if there is one, but keep an eye. They are like $90 new I believe, but are MANY times better than the Haynes or Chilton.

Here's how I did it. Get in real good with someone in your dealerships service dept. They toss those after they're so old. Get him to watch for you. I think all the greasy hand prints on the cover give it character. Mine's for the '89 so it has TTA info in it too.

GM manuals are expensive compare to Haynes and Chilton. It is just worth the price. Well, i was just lucky that i had a chance to use it when my friend let me borrowed his GM manuals. But if you want to save some bucks then Haynes and Chilton is just okay too.

Re: repair manuals

i found a place online that sold a PDF version of the 88 service manual.
Haynes manuals are nice for diagrams, charts etc. But the wiring diagrams are messed up. And the fuel injected models are appendices on the back of the manuals and again, are a pain to find all the info you might be looking for.

Service manuals from GM are the best bet in whatever format you get it.

Re: repair manuals

I bought a GM 1991 Firebird repair manual about a week ago off of ebay.
I'll likely scan most of it and make a pdf and share with everyone here and on thirdgen.org.

Re: repair manuals

There are deals to be had.
I bought my GM factory service manual for $15 last spring from these guys: http://www.qualitygmparts.com/
It was used but in great condition (a lot of the ebay ones looked ratty).
Their inventory is spotty and it doesnt look like they have any now though.
I found it just with a simple google search.

Re: repair manuals

I picked up a GM Service Manual for the 91 a couple years ago at the TA Nationals. There swap meet/vendor area is a great place to find just about anything and the prices aren't too bad.

Re: repair manuals

The GM Service Manual is one hundred times better than the Haynes manual I think. I have the Haynes manual and bought it in about 1994 when I had to start working on my own GTA. A friend of mine who works at GM gave me a brand new unused GM Service Manual for my 1987 GTA a few years ago as a gift and it has soo much more accurate information in it than the Haynes manual does, because the Haynes manual covers all makes and models of the Firebird line through about ten years and so some things are not accurate as they should be.

If you get the opportunity, you should get the GM Service Manual for the specific year of your GTA. It is a very good tool to have for your GTA.

Re: repair manuals

My 1991 Firebird manual FINALLY arrived in the mail. Ordering something from on Ebay from Canada apparently takes a little longer.
Quickly glanced it over, though, and it is quite the phone book. I figure having both the Haynes and the original service manual should compliment each other. I'm sure both have information the other won't.

Re: repair manuals

You are correct. The two manuals do compliment each other. For example, taking out the rad in my '94 Firebird....Haynes talkes about taking it out from the bottom, no mention in the GM Manual (Helms).

This means that the Helms manuals assume that you are a pro. Haynes (and Chilton) are written for the backyard mechanic.

On the other hand, for completeness, wiring diagrams and diagnostics, Helms all the way.

Taking radiator out from the bottom? Wow, that must be a different design than the 1987 GTA because it is I think impossible to take out the radiator through the bottom.
