Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Hi,
As an original owner of a 1988 Gun Metal 350 / digital dash, I always was crazy about the GTA's. Then the body style change of 1991 and 1992, and I never really liked them until recently, and only after finding this site, this has got me into them, but only now...

The topic here is which do you like better the 1987-1990's OR THE 1991-1992's.

Vote #1 is for the original style !!!!

Jeff

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

87-90 for sure, I am still trying to develop a taste for the 91-92 just seems to elude me. I think I could get used to the nose but that crappy looking plastic side panels by the doors I just can't stand.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Man, this is a no-win post if you answer it....

I have always liked the earlier style.... that was (and still is) my dream car. That's why I bought my red '88 GTA. I never cared for the 3rdGen T/As until the '85 restyle, and the GTA was just the model that put everything over the top for me personally.

No Firebird model has stirred my passions before or since the way the "original" GTAs did.... and still do. Something about the lines of the car.... from an artistic standpoint there is a sensuality in the rake of the body lines, yet the obvious muscularity shows at every corner of the car. No matter what anybody else says... to me it is beautiful.

The '91 restyle was then a "love it-hate it" issue and still seems to be today. Looking back now after the 4thGen run, I can see where Pontiac was trying to go with the styling and it was a very brave departure from the "norm" of the late '80s. At the time, I hated it with a passion. It was like "what in the HELL...."; I mean the Camaro redo was mild compared to what PMD went to market with.

Of course at the time I was unaware of the Banshee show car and all the other things that were going on the auto styling trends of the day. Now in hindsight I can certainly see what was in the designer's minds. Did they succeed.....? Again, in the eye of each beholder. It was certainly different.... maybe that was the overall intention.

As for me, I've grown to accept the later models for what they are.... an ongoing evolution in the cars we all love. My wife hates them terribly still after all these years; she calls them "p***y cars". As in every evolution, there are good things and bad things. But I'm getting ready to clean out my garage to make room for another possible/hopeful acquisition in the near future.... Having The Source Page, I feel it's only right to have an example of each model, don't you?

Hey, my wife might even come around..... after all, the '91-'92 cars have cupholders. She still bitches about that every single time we drive one somewhere 15 years later....

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

I like em both, but I have to say that I LOVE the 91-92 style. Reason being is that they are different. When normal everyday people see an "80s" Firebird, they're used to the 85-90 styling. When they see my 91 GTA, I always get the surprised looks and comments like "I've never seen a car like that before." Also, the car looks like it's flying even when it's standing still, and the nose area looks a lot more aerodynamic than the previous design. Don't get me wrong though, Im still all for the older bodies. I'm hoping I snag an 88 Notchback or an 89 TTA someday.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Hello everyone,

Well, I would have to say "Ditto" to Mr. Frankie's response. No surprise though because I have a 1987 GTA. I would have to say that it was a love at first sighting back in 1987 situation when I saw this GTA for first time and it has been no turning back ever since. The 1991 and 1992 models have their place as well. So I perfer the 1987 - 1990 models but I can understand, respect and appreciate all the work that someone put into their 1991 - 1992 GTA. Yumiko

Myself I like them both, I like the 91-92's better. Somethin about the lines, just makes ya want to stare for hours and hours. But I like them all, I have had an 87 GTA 5.7L and I liked it too, I wish I still had it.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Dude this is great !!

Were all KOOKS !!!!!

Reading the responses here I can see some split divisions.

In 1988-89, I traded in my 1986 Trans Am 305 - 4 barrel carb car into a 1988 GTA 350, and wow what a beauty.

Again I agree with #1 vote for the original style and share all of the viewpoints shared with the people here who also favor the OG style. !!

LOL....

Frankie I totally agree with the exact points made toward your dream car, I cant explian but for me when I see GTA's either on the road or anywhere, I ALWAYS LOOK AT IT TO SEE IT'S POTENTIAL, ALWAYS !!!

My favorite guitarist of all time is Randy Rhoads. Whenever I see or hear Randy I stop and say wow, what a super great fantastic talant, and I feel the same way about the original GTA's.
GTA's are like candy, or the lucious woman you fell in love with!!

Even looking at books of vintage cars or "DREAM CARS", I cant believe it, but I would pick a new 87-90 GTA or the TTA of course!!!

Just an American California kid at heart, LOL... 350 5.7 !!

Does this topic split some hairs here?.. LOL..... LOL....

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

When I bought My 87 GTA I had already owned several TA's. Including an New 79 and an 84. But when I saw the 87 GTA I just flipped. It was beautiful. Clean lines with no stripes or eagles. It was refreshing to have a car such as that hit the market.

So, my vote is the 87-90. I never warmed up to the 91 change. Then when the 4th gen came out I hated that even more.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

87-90 cars. As stated before. I never have, nor will I possibly ever like those ground effects on the 91-92 cars. Id buy a 91-92 Formula if the price was right cause the effects aren't there. WTF were they thinking at PMD?

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Mine would have to be the 87-90, mainly because I have the 89 GTA and I'm not too fond of the 91-92 nose.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

I love both styles. The 87-90 for their mean stances, and wide flat front noses. It doesn't matter what color, it looks menacing. However, after finding my 91, I've grown to love the "difference" between the cars. The 91-92's have a more aerodynamic body lines to them. The body panels make the car look more level, and not nose up like the 87-90's (which I love the way they look!). It seems that only certain colors on the 91-92's make the car look great (my favorite is WHITE!!!), but that is my biased opinion. To me, the Formula doesn't look right without the fog lights or body trim. (One thing I really like is how the car looks with just the Fog lights on, very intimidating.) It seems almost naked. I love the fact that not many 91GTA's are out there, and I always get a second glance on my car and compliments from those I talk to. I admit, I wasn't too keen the first time I saw it, because I was used to the 87-90's. But after years of ownership, tons of miles, and lots of staring, I truely love my car and appreciate what GM did to the third gens in its final years.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

87-90 definitely. But I'm biased, since I own an 87 ; )

But to be honest, the Firebird name brings instantly to mind the 2nd gen body style for me, must be the big screaming eagle on the hood. When you see one of those cars, you have *no* doubt what it is. I still like the 3rd gens better, but the 2nd gens I think are more what the Firebird name evokes in people's minds.

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

GTA's up to 1990. I just didn't like the new ground effects for 1991. Everyone is different, I know some prefer 91-92.

I really wanted a convertible. Pontiac wouldn't sell me the convertible they had at the auto shows, they said they would re-nose it for the 1991 show circuit.

I think the 90's convertible Camaro looks better than the convertible 90's Firebirds anyway. The 91-92 Z28 ....... did Chevy think the Ply Superbird needed a sibling?

Re: Favorite GTA's 1987-90 OR 1991-92 Models

Its all about the 91-92 Style. If you think about it. Its the one of the rarest designs of all generation of Fbodys as the look only lasted 2 years. The short production run and the more exotic look always captured me even when i had an 89. Personally i like the gfx on the car. Just the overall image. Plus i had never seen a GTA in as good a shape as mine.
