CD player question

It is my understanding that there was an available factory cd player starting in 87'. Are they impossible to find? If a GTA came with the tape deck, will the controls on the steering wheel work with the cd player or are the controls different? Was this even an option? Thanks!!

Re: CD player question

Hey Kevin, there is supposedly a deck that will work, it is part #12340956 I believe that is an AC Delco GM Part #. Hope that helps a little bit. The 1991 & 1992 decks fit in our car good, but they had a different plug for the steering wheel control (it works a different way) If you figure anything out, let me know. I just purchased a 1998 Pontiac CD deck (it works great except the steering wheel controls) I really am trying to figure out how to get it to work.

Re: CD player question

The CD stereo was first available for the Firebird line in 1989, and GTAs that had it installed used a standard Trans Am leather wrapped steering wheel with no audio controls.

I have long heard of the "phantom" factory GM Delco CD player that would supposedly fit and function correctly, but have never talked with or heard from anyone who has actually installed it.

Re: CD player question

Is there an interface of some sort that will allow an aftermarket cd player to be used with the steering wheel controls?

Re: CD player question

Yes man, it is called a PAC. Check with Crutchfield.

Re: CD player question

Awesome! Thank you. I am considering the purchase of a GTA and want to keep it as "factory" as possible. I don't however like the idea of riding around sporting a cassette deck. I think the PAC is the way to go....

Re: CD player question

Hey Knight Rider, if you need any help, check with Crutchfield. They are very helpful & knowledgable. The PAC box SWX-1 will only work with aftermarket head units that use an IR remote. And you need the remote to program it. Hope this helps bro. So if you want an after market deck, you should have no problem. With the Pac, you can even program your steering wheel controls to do different functions. I have the later model Pontiac CD player. It looks great like updated factory, sounds great, etc, but the steering wheel controls do not work. I will figure this out though. Somehow. I just do not want an aftermarket deck. I can't beleive this hasn't been figured out yet.
Later Bro

Re: CD player question

I felt the same way about the aftermarket deck. I do however want the steering wheel controls to work. I think using the Pacs unit is the best of both worlds. I did look on Crutchfield and found what I need. Now I just have to get the car... Thanks again for the help!
