Help Me Please My police interceptor having issues..help!!!

Ok I am not great at diagnosing problems, but maybe u all can help me out. I own a 99 crown vic police interceptor... and when i am sitting in park and go to rev the engine. The engine sputters then revs after about 2 full seconds of sputtering. I also notice this when I am driving ( only when i press hard on the gas) I have heard transmission is crapping out. But that couldn't be if it is sputtering when I rev the engine in park.right?? I am leaning on a full tune-up. What do you all think??? thanks
p.s.--- I am not a ford guy and never will be. But I do really like the old police cars.

Yeah, I've driven more than a few of those with my Dept. Don't really have a clue about what the prob is, but DO NOT get rearended in that thing.

Ford has been sued up to it's eye teeth over those Vic's, as they were made with a flaw that, when rearended at some even moderate speeds, the car's fuel tank explodes instantly.

Several police officers have been burned to death because of this. Ford has gone in and installed a metal plate to help prevent this, but only for working PD cars, NOT for used ones on the secondary market.

Not for sure what years were worse, but you might wanna Google it and find out. Not trying to scare you, just give you a heads up.

Here's one quick site I found:

www.crownvictoriasafetyalert.com

Take care!

Yes Texas Raider I am aware of the exploding fuel tank.....scary!!!.. I have 2 children and wasn't aware of this until after I bought it. But thanks for sharing the info with me, i do appreciate it. Its hard saying how hard the old cop cars have been driven. But my guess they were driven very hard. The tranny is soon to go out on this car...my fear!

I heard somewhere that police cars are extremely well maintained. I don't know if its true or not, I heard it on a TV show or something... I would like to have a police interceptor, put some strobes on it like an unmarked car... Would be fun to scare friends with

Depends on the Department. If you go to buy a fleet PD car from auction they will most likely have to provide you with the maintenance schedule perfomed on the car - at least my Dept. does.

The frequency of maintenance is probably offset by the hardness of use anyway...if you buy a used patrol car, do NOT expect to be getting a car gently used. Your best bet is to go to the PD auctioning or selling them off and ask which ones were supervisor or investigator cars, usually unmarked ones. These are usually driven a lot less vigorously but probably have the same high frequency of maintence performed on them.

Just my .02 cents.

That would be illegal in most places.

Actually, so many folks are used to seeing Crown Vics as nothing but PD cars, it's not hard to make one look like an unmarked unit.

First off, a clone cop car needs to be black, white or maybe dark blue or green. Then, get a grill guard like this one from Rhino:

GT Distributors - Vehcile Equipment Accessories

Some departments actually leave these on cars they auction, most don't. But they might sell you an old one if you ask.

Then make sure your car has the blacked out rims like this puppy has:

NOT the big ugly chrome ones. Makes you look like grandma with those. Then stick a long CD radio antenna on the trunk, tint the windows and put some smoke lens foglights on the grille guard.
Folks will be slamming their brakes on every time you pass!

Of course, on the other hand, keep it in a garage. You'd be shocked how many police cars get vandalized late at night by hoods and thugs
who have an irrational bias against those who have beat their butts and thrown them in jail.

All in all, it's a cool project to build a 'pseudo' cop car. If I did it, I have to use a 1994-1996 Chevy 9C1, though...

I drove one of these for awhile, and that LT1 moves that car faster than you'd believe!
And it's pre-Government Motors GM, so that's a plus to me!

Re: My police interceptor having issues..help!!!

My car was used as an unmarked Indianapolis police car, and I actually like my chrome rims. everyone has their oppinions. And most unmarked police cars here in Indiana do not have the grill guards. Only the marked ones. My car came from an Auction. The interior had holes where u can tell they hacked the lights out and stuff. And the console was taken out. But other than that it is a beautiful car.

I didn't get to your post fast enough, but I thought that you were gonna find that it was a bad or clogged injector. When we drove CV interceptors in my department, we had a real bad problem with the fuel injection systems. They were always in the shop for something. I would look at aftermarket injectors.
