Re: Im Real!

Well, looking over the production #s...

Y84(GTA)--------9,765
5.0----------------2.852
T-tops------------2,531
Black paint-------2129
Black Leather-----532

Looks like you have 1 of 532 1988 GTAs!

That was the lowest # I could come up with, with what you listed. In fact, it is one of the lowest #s for 1988 anyways.

I did notice some strange #s, that didn't add up...Like the instruments...

U21 -- Cluster, Instrument (Oil, Coolant Temp, Volt, Tach) -- 5
U52 -- Instrument Cluster, Electronic -- 5,102

If you do the math, and I read those descriptions right, 5,107 total Firebirds, aren't quite the # of 9.765 GTAs. Besides, only FIVE analog gauge equipped cars, in 1988?

Only 5 Analog Dash? that cant be right, that would mean 99.9% has Digital and I know that insnt so just by looking at them on Ebay

Re: Im Real!

I have a question about the numbers. Are these numbers all of the GTAs worldwide or just GTAs in the United States? I personally have seen a few in Japan. And I am positive that there were many in Europe too. Yumiko

Re: Im Real!

The firebirds were only ever made in the US and exported around the world.

The 4th gens were made in both the US and up in Quebec. Im pretty sure those are accurate production numbers.

Fourth gens were only made in Canada, not the United States.

Re: Im Real!

Ah thats right too...

The VIN first # is #1 to indicate US and #2 is to indicate canada, but they were all built in St Therese Quebec. Thought there was a plant that built them in the US like Van Nuys or something like the thirdgens. Thanks for the info george

I am unsure what your meaning is. I have seen one real GTA in Japan. I saw about 20 Firebirds in Japan and some of the owners of them that I was able to talk with said they were GTAs, but I could tell that they were just plain Firebirds. For some odd reason, most of the Japanese guys think that all Firebirds are GTAs. Not sure exactly why that is, but that is what I have experienced while home visiting. Perhaps to the Japanese in Japan it does not matter a Firebird or GTA, because all American imported sports cars are sold in Japan for very high prices, and to maintain them with replacement parts will cost so so much also. In other words, in Japan to have a Firebird or a GTA, there is not difference, they both will cost a forture to have, drive and maintain. Perhaps this may be the reason they are all considered "GTAs." But I really do not know. Yumiko

Re: Im Real!

Maybe its the smokers package or a light package for the interior? Or maybe it was a bottle of "factory carwash" lol

As for what I meant about the firebirds only being built in the US, its the entire firebird lineup, GTA, Trans Am, Firebird, Formula, they were only built in the USA and then exported around the world. Bunch were exported to dealers up here in Canada, I dont think any were originally sold in Japan as an example. People would have had to privately import them from the US and bring them into the country. I do know however that some Camaros were dealer sold in Germany and other european countries, hence the paddle mirrors because it was a safety requirement for export to the european countries, same with the taillights, they HAVE to include an orange turn signal in most countries over there, which is why its next to impossible to see 4th gen firebirds over in Ireland for example.

Re: Im Real!

By the way Yumiko, the GTA that you saw in Japan may have belonged to an American military member. Military car owners usually ship their vehicles to where ever they are being stationed, even overseas (like myself here in Germany). Do you know of any US bases near where you saw it?

Re: Im Real!

It had to be owned by a Japanese, because the license plate on the GTA would have had a character "Y" on it signifying that the registered owner is a foreigner. The GTA that I saw did not have the "Y" plate. So it was not a foreigner who owned/registed it.

The Japanese government does this so when we are driving and we see a "Y" plate on a car, we know that the person driving may be spending time in order to process/translate road signs and rules. It is a way to be curtious towards a driver that is unfamilar with driving in Japan and also keeps us to interact with caution because they may not be so experienced with the rules in Japan. Keeps everyone aware and helps to prevent accidents. Yumiko

Re: Im Real!

I wanted add in greater details about the last post of the answer I gave you in regards to understanding the information of what it is of my description about the license plates.

I looked through my photographs that I took during my trips back to Japan and found two examples to show you on the license plates that I was describing as "Y" and non-"Y".

First attachment shows the "Y" that I was talking about. This "Y" means that the registered owner is a non-Japanese citizen.

The second attachment does not have the "Y" but instead a charactor from the Hiragana alphabet. This means that the registered owner is a Japanese citizen.

That specific charactor on the license plate is called the "prefix" and it is a letter from the Japanese phonetic alphabet. This writing system is called hiragana of which there are 46 different characters in all of them. The prefix that is on the plate on the Corvette is the third charactor in this phonetic alphabet.

The GTA that I saw in Japan did not have the "Y". Plus I recall talking to the owner "Japanese guy" and I showed him a photograph of my own GTA that I carry in my purse. He was very shocked that I also had a GTA but in the U.S. Yumiko

Re: Im Real!

Boy,
Do I wish we could do something like that here in America!
Ha, then we would know who is here illegally.
Then again, we should have a special one for really old people.
Do I have stories to tell you about people from other countries, doing what they do here (both what I have seen in Arizona and California).
No way it would happen, as we have to be PC.
Funny how no one else from other countries has to be PC.
