OEM spares
What is the difference between N64 & N65? Both of my spares are aluminum, but one is the "spoked" aluminum finish, and the other looks like a blck steelie, but is aluminum, not steel.
N64 -- Spare Wheel and Tire, Aluminum Space Saver -- 874 N65 -- Spare Wheel and Tire, Stowaway -- 10

Re: OEM spares
From what I've read on thirdgen, the spoked aluminum will not clear the PBR calipers on the rear (some say the 1LE brakes) and the black aluminum one does.

Re: OEM spares
Hmmm...My black aluminum spare is from my 89, with PBRs, and my aluminum colored one, is from my 87, with non PBRs. So that kinda makes sense.

Re: OEM spares
What is PBR?
My spoked spare is from 88 and my t/a has full disc brakes?

Re: OEM spares
The calipers. PBRs were aluminum, 88 & older, they were cast iron.
The cast iron ones are prone to sticking open, not working, bad clamping force...Basically, the PBRs are a better design. I guess I'll be switching spares, when I swp my 87 rear end for the 89 rear end.

Re: OEM spares
merc, simply put.... 1989 and up GTAs have better brakes than the earlier models. Stephen detailed the specific changes quite nicely.
Both my '88 GTAs have the N64 spare and I know my Notchback has the silver spoked design.... but both those codes show up in 1988 before the brake changeover and it is split almost 7,000 to 2,000 in favor of the N64 style wheel for that year. No N65s show up in 1989, and then there are smaller N65 numbers for each year through 1992. So, Hell, I have no idea as to the difference.... |
