GTA wheels

I've heard that there was a difference in the wheels put onto our cars, some were dimpled or something? As well any difference between the black ones and the gold ones? thanks - stu

Re: GTA wheels

'87 had non-dimpled rims. After that 88+ had the dimpled rims, Gold on the GTA only all other colors on the Trans Ams.

The dimples are along the outside circumference of the wheel, closest to the tire.

Re: GTA wheels

Actualy if you want an example of both, go onto ebay. Right now mine are on there from my 87, and there is a set with the dimples as well. Both have good pictures so you will be able to see the difference.

Re: GTA wheels

Gold or black...either way, 87=no dimples, 88+=dimples

Re: GTA wheels

The 88 with dimples shipped on my T/A as well as my GTA.

Though I've got an oddball one on my second set which has no dimples, I only noticed it now that this was brought up and it was from an 87 Trans Am.

Re: GTA wheels

Yeah. I learned about the no-dimples years ago, when we bought a set of crosslace wheels for my wife's Camaro. Turned out they were the 87 non-dimple style.

2 owners ago changed out the crosslace wheels on my 87 for some aftermarket ones, but the guy after him, bought a set of 88+ ones, so my 87 has 88+ wheels.

Now I have 2 88+ sets, and wish they were 87 correct, just because my GTA is a 87.

Re: GTA wheels

What I was told is that the non dimple wheels (87) had a very soft center section on them. When mounting and dismounting tires if the person doing it is not careful they can crack or stretch the aluminum center causing the center caps not to fit anymore and just fly off. The dimple rims have a stronger center and this does not happen as easy.

GTA Year: 1988
GTA Engine: Custom
Re: GTA wheels

His rims were switched because all GTAs up to 92 had gold rims. All other Firebirds/Trans AMs had other colors of the cross-laced rims. Also, the disc brake setup wasn't on all GTAs either although on most. I can't remember the RPO codes for the drum setup...I want to say it was WS7 but I'm not for sure. It'll be listed in the RPO section of the main website.

Re: GTA wheels

WS7 is correct. they first started using the RPO fin the second generation. but carried it over into the third generation. at one point i heard it was used because they RAN OUT of disc setups at the factory and still had T/As with WS6 to build, so they delivered them WS7 (all WS6 equipment except disc brakes). i have also heard that mid-year 86 disc brakes became no longer a part of the Ws6 package, meaning you could have the WS6 RPO without having to have the Disc brakes as well.

this thread on TGO has alot of information. it sites the "brake shortage" year as 1991. TGO - drum-brake-ws6
