some help with a 79 truck

well my uncle has a 79 Cheyenne with a 454 and turbo 400 tranny that he uses for truck/tractor pulls. he has been upgrading and fiddling with it for the past 20 years and finally put a huge cam in it, i thought it was too big, it doesn't start to make good power till 4k rpm. i'm more of a drag guy so pulling is a bit new to me, so i suggested with that cam he get a larger stall converter so he can get the rpms up faster. that was the problem he was having after he switched rear gears from 373 to 308s. he is currently switching back to the 373s. i guess my question is would a higher stall put too much stress on the tranny when it does engage while pulling the sled? also would even taller gears be better? maybe some 410s? or taller?

4.10
4.56
higher stall will generate a crapton of heat.
Make sure the transmission can handle the added heat, so add a large tranny cooler

Though it'll help get the motor into it's power band.

Also look at upgrading the transmission internals to hardened.

Re: some help with a 79 truck

I guess that is why people were all over my '80 454 4-speed 3/4 ton with the 4:56 rear before I bought it.
