Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

Replaced the rear hatch seal just before Christmas so hopefully it would stop leaking while it was parked for the winter. Then I left it in the care of my best friend while I moved to SoCal. But going to go it May 1st but that is another whole thread.

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

I pulled the engine out - new valve seals, oil pump, and pan gasket, removed all a.i.r. tubes and factory oil cooler. Plus plugs, wires, cap, rotor, new starter, new motor mounts - all while I had easy access. Fourth-gen ('02) center console, new shift knob (ditched the Hurst pistol), and did a better job with the trunk panel trim pieces I cut in order to add 3-point belts in the rear for my sons.

Wow - now that I type it out, I can't believe I spent that much money on it this offseason

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

White smoke or Blue smoke...
White=coolant/water
Blue=oil
Grey/Black=Fuel

Make sure of the colour...

If its white then its not oil but water. You will need to do a press ck on the cooling system or look at the rad to see if any oil is in it or if the dipstick has a chocolate milk shake color to it. hth

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

f-body's have the "blues" due to leaky valve seals on the stock heads.
After the engine is off, some of the valves are partially open/closed and the oil leaks down from the head galleries and past the valve stems into the chamber. It causes a massive amount of ash build up on the plugs hurting performance, causes blue smoke on startup, hard starts, misfires, sluggishness and possibly even predetonation in extreme cases. My old L98 cast irons on #8 had so much ash caked onto a set of bosch+4s that you could barely see the electrode, after 7000 miles...

Needless to say I turfed the heads in favor of aluminum ones...

Oh and to stay on topic, I pulled the front bumper off the other day, that took me 2 hours to do because of those 4 quick release nut thingers at the upper part of the fender for the bumper cover frame. I hate those things SOOOO much.

Niki's car does it too. It does look white, but there is a slight blue hue to it. I had the coolant "white" smoke with my 81 and it wasn't just a little bit...it was a fog system. I've got a set of aluminum 113s for her car too, just haven't got them installed yet. They need to be milled first...then again, I may have a good valve job done on them and switch them out with mine. Hmmm...

I just realized, I need to do a bunch of crap lol
Centerlink, and drive shaft done.

Have the strut mounts, and ordered the bilsteins and those 2 will be going on next.

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

Someone mentioned a coolant leak .. well I had one of those myself. I just had to change the heater core to fix it ... what a pita.

Otherwise ... I have driven the GTA only a few times and washed it once. That's about it.

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

i had replaced the front pads, rear pads, rotors, calipers. had the exhaust done. found the intake leakin cooant from the back so i attempted to replace the gaskets. ended up replacing all the bolts, the intake manifold (as i broke off a peice of it) snapped 2 bolts off in the pass. side head. then the gaskets. replaced all the runner gaskets. thoroghly cleaned the TB, replaced the fan switch in the pass side head, new TV cable/fluid/filter/pan w/ a drain plug. changed out the V belt setup with a serpentine setup off a formula. bypassed the Tb coolant passages. replaced the injectors w/ boch design 3's. blew out the radiator on the first drive, bought new radiator. got rid of the 87 style air intake setup for one from an 88 that puts the maf at easier access when the thing craps out. put my drivers door back together.. umm, h4 headlights and export mirrors. then i shipped it here to germany.. waiting to go get it registered. and it still may not pass inspection b/c they check the parking brake and i dont know if the cables are frozen and the flowmaster muffler may be too loud.. grrr.

Re: What have you done to your GTA this winter.

I think I only see 1 or 2 GTAs on the road during the year around here, it's good to see so many people keeping their cars in shape AND driving them.

Changed the oil.....Put on a new nose.....And most importantly I DROVE mine.

They were made to be driven & enjoyed, not tucked away & looked at.
