Bose Speakers

I scored a set off TGO for $50. They came in the mail today. The seller says the speakers still function, but I really only bought them for the boxes. I plan on upgrading the speakers before they get installed into the car. I'm looking forward to hearing the difference in sound quality over the 6x9s I currently have.

Re: Bose Speakers

oh man, you have no idea what a world of fun you are in for.

The speaker boxes make the car's audio sound like night and day with the right set of speakers.

Good luck, and try to wipe the smile off your face when you're all finished

Re: Bose Speakers

LOL! I'll think about it Merc. :P

I'm excited although the speakers looked bigger in the pictures, but I'm sure that I can find some aftermarket ones that will do the trick and be much better. Does anyone know who makes a good 5-inch speaker?

Re: Bose Speakers

I went with a pair of planet audio 5 1/4"

Good luck finding a company making 5" woofers. They are few and far between.

What I had to do was find a set of speakers that would almost fit (baskets on most speakers are way too big).
I then took dynamat and layered it around the opening to build up enough of a base to close the airgap between the speaker's base and the box's base. Then bolt it in and all done.

Also, use dynamat or other deadening materials around the edge of the speaker box when you bolt it into the sail panel. It will help with any vibrations that may develop.

Re: Bose Speakers

I was cuirous if a 5 1/4 speaker would work or not. I guess that 1/4 is just enough to make it not fit. What type of 4x6 did you use?

Re: Bose Speakers

yep, those ARE the UQ7 enclosures.

I used a cheapy pair of infinity 4x6"s in the dash and in the sail panel. Picked them up from Futureshop for 40 bucks a pair on sale.

They put out some half decent mids and highs.

After toying with the idea of going with an aftermarket head unit, I decided to go with a 4th gen stock cd player so I could still utilize the UQ7 option. I have one blown sub that I will be replacing from the fiero website and then I will hear what I have. Will those Infinity speakers fit in the enclosure?

Re: Bose Speakers

no, infinity 5 1/4" will not, the basket is too big. The 4x6, they will work fine.

As for the UQ7 "option", do you also have the amp that goes with it? You will need that in order to properly use the 10ohm speakers that shipped with it, otherwise you're better off to just run the speakers in parallel with any head unit. The speakers that shipped with them have issues with aftermarket head units unless you have the factory 20 watt amp or whatever it was.

The car came with the UQ7 option. So everything is there and working except one of the subs is blown. I am assuming that the amp for the subs is a seperate amp and not part of the factory head unit. All I will be doing is swapping the head unit and replacing the subs.

Re: Bose Speakers

Only thing though Wes is that the plugs on the '87 are different than the ones on the back of the 4th gen unit. Also the Monsoon systems are totally different than the ones in the 3rd gen and may not work with the UQ7 system.

Re: Bose Speakers

Since my car didn't come with teh UQ7 option I'm going to have to find a small amp somewhere.

Re: Bose Speakers

my suggestion is still, to replace the speakers withs omething more mainstream, use the boxes, run the lines from the boxes in parallel.

Then, if you have some tech savvy, you can wire up the slider resistor to a remote gain for an aftermarket amp in the trunk well or another place. I have the slider control ready for such a purpose. I just need to get an amp with the remote gain control. Rockford Fosgate has a couple models of amps that have this remote control, and Im pretty sure I can make the slider go in place of a knob just using the electronics from the remote gain control for the amp.

I bought one of these.

I am going to replace the current radio with one of the 2 models in that Ebay ad.

Re: Bose Speakers

Ok, the radio from a '93-96 Trans Am should do you fine then, that's the top one in the picture.

I would be interested in how that works.

Re: Bose Speakers

To be safe, I would use the one with the EQ since that was standard in the T/As. My '98 has the Monsoon system in it and it sounds good, but not as good as the aftermarket system in my '87.
