touch up chips

In the process of using touch up paint on 6 chips on my left and right fenders. They were down to the metal until I used the the paint to bring the color back. From 10 feet away it looks great , but as you get closer u still notice where its chipped. Just now it looks like a painted-chip. The outline of the chip is still visible. Should I just keep on adding paint until the outline is not visible. Im a amateur so please help. thanks

Re: touch up chips

That is the easiest approach. One thing you can do is to go to a body shop supply store and get a hard sanding block. You build up the chip and when it is slightly higher than the surrounding paint, you use the hard block and sand smooth. Then you can polish the chip and surrounding area. The hard block makes it easier to sand only the high spot and not the surrounding area.

Re: touch up chips

Dr Color Chip. http://www.drcolorchip.com/ I have been thinking about doing this. I guess they can match up the paint really good. I can't say that about the touch up paint that I bought at a paint shop. Problem with touch up paint is the brush. It is too big and the paint is too thick. A tooth pick works good for little rock chips. I had my hood repainted and the rear quarter panel repainted on my GTA. They did a very good job of matching the paint. They have some touch up paint for me that I can never get from them. I'm going to have call them to see what is going on.

Re: touch up chips

Just go slow with the sanding block and check your progress often. The block is small, probably 1"x2" and is easy to handle. I think they were originally used for removing drips/runs in a paint job.

Just an FYI, you can still get touch up paint from Pontiac. I got a bottle for my GTA about 3 years ago.

Re: touch up chips

I got touch up paint from my body shop when my car was repainted. He had leftover paint that he gave me but could mix up some, too. What he told me was to cut a Q-tip in half at an angle and use the stick end to dab paint on. You do this in layers and you'll build up without getting too thick and it's just barely noticeable. The edge buffs out.
