Egr wire

Ok, pulled the egr out of my 89GTA. The question I have is how can I test the wire that screws in to the egr. Mine is a bit rusted and looks rough. I can clean it up, but I was wondering how to check it to see if it is good. I am guessing that it uses resistance that changes as the temp heats up the element. Just a guess. Am I close on this one? If am close, what should the resistance be? If am off what is the way to test it.

Re: Egr wire

That wire should be attached to a temp switch that screws into the base of the valve. When EGR flows the switch makes from the heat and tells the computer that EGR is on. If the computer sees no resistance or a short at the wrong time it will fault the valve. You can test it with a multimeter. Use the ohms setting back to the computer. Then test the switch the same way when cold and after putting in boiling water. The switch has a bimetal strip that moves with temp changes.

Regards,

Ron.

Re: Egr wire

It screws into the egr and has one wire coming out to the wording harness.

Re: Egr wire

Correct, it's not a sensor, it's an exhaust temperature switch. I don't know what the specs are, but I would think the closing point would be significantly higher than could be tested in boiling water.

And be careful not to damage it. It's not available from GM nor any other aftermarket supplier. The only NOS ones left are selling for big bucks.

Re: Egr wire

I tested it in boiling water and it opened the switch. So I am going to use it.

Re: Egr wire

I was doubting myself for a while. Glad the boiling water worked. I was thinking it should.
