Fixed my dash!

Today I bought a digital dash cluster out of a 88 GTA that was totaled in an engine fire. I payed $100 for it locally, and the back is a little burnt but everything mechanical is in good shape. I switched out the odometer screen, and the message center today in about 3 hours, and now I have an entire extra dash just in case something happens!

Here is the dash after I finished, and put it back together with my old odometer

The back looks bad

In progress

Everything installed! I WAS AMAZED every single digit on the odometer screen works!! My original screen had a bunch of burnt out digits and it looked rather dumb..

I was so pleased that the car was fixed I gave it a wash and wax with some tire shine! Here is how she sits now!

Re: Fixed my dash!

Congrats. Sounds like you and seller got a good deal. That's a decent price for a digital cluster for you, and a decent price for the seller who wouldn't be able to know if the cluster still worked.

I say the above because it appears the circuitry is damaged on the back of the cluster. The cluster is probably only good for parts if that circuitry is damaged as it appears.

Great! Glad to see you got it working again. Is the mileage the same?

Re: Fixed my dash!

Thanks for the compliments and comments guys! Yes, The back of the dash is melted, and the circuitry is done for so its perfect for my cause. Yes the mileage on my car is the same. Im still in awe over the fact that the new screen 100% correctly works with every segment showing up on the numbers. Maybe because its never been in Midwest winter temperatures. I am really glad I got it fixed, I thought it was kind of cool yesterday when I was working on it I found a whole bunch of original AC Delco labels and stickers laying around inside the dash. I ended up pretty much stripping the dash bare, but I didn't take pictures of that. My message center doesn't beep and go crazy when I go over bumps anymore either! I had another question. Where does the odometer on the digital dash cars store its mileage? There is a circuit bored that just pops out that the odometer screen is attached to, so its either that or the ecm?

Re: Fixed my dash!

its in that little circuit board behind the dash display. It is controlled in the same way the "analog" cluster is even though it is digitally controlled as well.
There is an NVRAM chip that is onboard and it can be reset pretty easily and modified too.

Re: Fixed my dash!

That dash looks sweet. I'm glad to see that you didn't have to switch out to anaglog. There's just something about the digital dash that screams COOL.

Oh, and no more hitting the dash, ok?

Re: Fixed my dash!

I wonder, would it be possible to convert a TTA to digital dash?

Re: Fixed my dash!

It is always possible, but you would need to add a seperate boost gauge as you obviously can't have the tachometer with the integrated boost gauge in there.

Nice job on the dash.

Any chance you could find out what kind of bulb sits in behind the odometer screen. I have to replace mine and would like to buy the bulb before i tear it apart.

Sorry man, It was a couple of months ago when I replaced that bulb. I know that I got it from checker auto parts, and on the box it was labeled as a reverse lamp for tail lights. It was an expensive little thing too, like $10 or $15..
