New parts ordered today

Finally bit the bullet and ordered a few body panels for my GTA.

Ram air style 1 hood
Fenders (left and right)
And a pair of axle shafts to repair my 9 bolt

Getting the car appraised tomorrow, should be interesting to see what kinda sticker they put on it when it's all said and done. Im expecting to see something in the neighbourhood of 1000-2000 tops. But thats all I need for insurance

When you removed the axle shafts from your 9 bolt, did you need a puller to yank them out? I want to remove my axles so I can get
backing plates zinc plated. I already have the 4 bolts removed from the axle shaft retainer, but they still won't budge.

Re: New parts ordered today

yeah, you'll need a puller.

I haven't started on the axle replacement yet since I need to gather the parts up first.

I would think your notchback should be worth more than that. We would all love to see pictures of your car. Are you doing the body work yourself? Do you like the ram air style 1 better than style 2?
I have been thinking about getting one but I can't decide between the two. I also have a chance of picking up a 87 GTA roller so I might get that instead of the hood.

Re: New parts ordered today

I prefer the low profile more than the larger hood scoops. The Ramair 2 style looks like crap on thirdgens, so does large cowl inductions in my opinion.

I will just be affixing the body panels myself since I have no skill or practice doing body work. The car has to go into the collision shop to see about the frame alignment numbers to make sure they are within spec. Get some things fixed up. Set of seats need recovering. New headliner needed.
Axles need redoing.

The notchback needs to be stripped and repaired as well, its taken a lot of water damage over the years and the paint is bubbling all over.

The guy came out today and on a positive note, he never knew about the notchbacks till I told him, so I might be scouring the site for production numbers and printouts to hand to him to verify.

He gave me a guesstimate of around 3-4k which is alright. When its all said and done I would expect to see in the neighborhood of 10-15k. But thats not for a few years yet...

Re: New parts ordered today

Well...got one fender from that Taiwanese company, Cobra King...

Shoddy quality sheet metal but what do you expect for 140cdn?

A single GM OEM from year one or classic industries runs in the neighbourhood of 400USD

Driver's side fender was for a...Grand Prix???? Someone was lysdexic...

Part# 834-31L for Firebird
Part# 843-31L for Grand Prix

Re: New parts ordered today

I agree with you merc. I like the lower profile as well, the bigger nostrils on the style 2 just are a little too high for my taste in terms of blending in with the rest of the lines of the car.

Too bad about the fenders. Any wreckers close by with reasonable fenders you can remove?

Re: New parts ordered today

no wreckers around. Im just waiting till the end of the month to get the next fender in.

So after I get the driver's side fender, I will have replaced 100% of the front end sheetmetal and plastics.

So far i've had to replace...
Fenders
Lower ground effects
Front bumper cover
Headlight buckets
Headlight mounting brackets
Hood
Inner/upper air deflection plastics under the bumper cover
Rebar and impact waffle
Front springs (they were heated/bent)
Ball joints
Bump stops
Sway bar endlinks
Sway bar bushings

After this, im going to try to adjust the steering box a bit to tighten it up
If that doesnt work, new steering box and pitman arm. Im NOT going to try removing the old one, its a real ***** even on newer cars...

http://certifit.com/

i've seen fenders for a TA from them and they looked great.

Especially with the Canadian dollar sitting at about $0.78 US. That plus "international" shipping charges makes any kind of purchase from the US pretty darn painful.

Re: New parts ordered today

Im sure with a nice coat of paint they will look just as good as any other OEM one. I just need to ensure that im not going to any super markets or anything as im sure they will dent a lot easier. I do have some skills in massaging small dents out of panels from the few lessons one of my club's sponsors taught us.

But yeah, if I was in the US, i'd be all about going for the OEM replacements. but like GTA 50 mentioned, our dollar took a s***kicking over the last 6 months and we no longer have the equality/advantage of buying at lower US prices anymore.

To ship the hood and axle shafts from hawk's cost me a little over 400 in taxes and shipping costs CDN. Plus the conversion of the cost of the hood worked out to be just over 1100 cdn for everything when it was all said and done.

Re: New parts ordered today

heres some pics of the hood installation and my attempt at salvaging the driver's side fender.

I am replacing both fenders after today with the ones from a 92 firebird.
Im pretty sure they will fit.

Will try some more fitment tomorrow.
Biggest problem so far with the fitment is the front bumper cover is out by 1/4" and the wiper arms are rubbing on the rear of the hood.
The driver's side headlight door is rubbing as well.

I'm pretty sure the front is jammed by about 1/8"to 1/4". Should be interesting to see the frame machine's take on this by the end of the summer heh.

Still need to get to a mechanic to get a bearing press to get the new bearing, retainer and wheel seal onto the replacement axle.

Fixing up a leaky valve cover and a melted #3 wire tomorrow.
More pics to follow
