If you can wait until tomorrow, I will go to the shop and get the 1988 GM service manual. If the filter can be changed, it should be in the book. I believe that this canister is part of the fuel tank venting system and I would not delete it. There is an additional vent, back by the rear axle. It looks like a wiffle ball on a rubber hose. That is a good one to replace as well.

Guess I will have to dig in to "the book". I see that NAPA and others offer just a filter.

Cool, let me know how you do replace it. I am quite sure mine needs it again.

Yup. There is absolitely no emmision equipment on my car now so the canister is really kind of pointless for the purpose of a visual inspection. Since my car doesn't have to go through a visual inspection then there is no need for it. Besides, with the cars getting older they'll start to fall into different catagories with vehicle inspections and such so in the end I don't think it's really going to matter much.

Shop manual was no help. They show a cut away view of the canister and it doesnt indicate that there is a filter inside. Service procedure is to replace the canister.

Re: charcoal canister..

I've asked GM about this, just replace the canister.

If you want to clean up the engine bay where it is sitting, make a bracket that attaches to the fender support and mount it in there behind the fender. You can run the hoses in through the battery tray that is on the pass side, it will fit as that's where I have mine running because of my SLP Airbox.
