Bad starter?

Well yesterday I went to start my car and it didnt want to start it would crank but wouldnt turnover, then it just stopped trying to crank. When I turn the key over I was getting nothing not even clicks. So I crawled underneath and beat on the starter a bit and tried it again and it started. What I need to know is, does that mean the starter is bad or is it just the solenoid?

Re: Bad starter?

COuld be a loose connection and when you beat on the starter the vibration could have been enough to make a connection. I would try and see if the wires are tight on the sol. Also, IMO, it could be the fact that your battery terminals need cleanin as well as the terminals on the cables.

Re: Bad starter?

If that the case then its probably in the sol. If you can get a remote starter button and hook it up that may answer alot of your questions b/c it could be in th switch. hth

Re: Bad starter?

Was it hot or cold? Headers or stock manifolds? If it starts fine cold, but not hot, I'd say heat soak. Put in a remote Ford style solenoid, and your all set. My 68 Camaro was that way with the headers.

Since the GM starter solenoid is part of the starter, you can't go buy just 1 piece of it. It's the whole thing or nothing.

Re: Bad starter?

It wont start cold, car has stock manifolds. So I cant just replace the solenoid? I looked at advanced auto's website and they do list a solenoid only available.

Re: Bad starter?

Really? I always assumed that since the solenoid was part of the starter, it was a all or nothing deal. Never seen just a portion of the starter replaced, which the solenoid is part of the starter.

Re: Bad starter?

Actually since the starter dont cost much more I would just get it instead and especially if you got the new sol on and then a week later starter goes bad.

yeah you can buy just the solenoid and put it onto the old starter. i've done it a couple times for various people.
