What are the top speed of a 1988 GTA, 1989 GTA, 1988 Trans-Am, 1989 Trans-Am ??

The top speed can differ from a lot of things man like the driver, how cold it is, all sorts of stuff so... how about you go and try it and tell us how fast.

I seen a couple of GTA's do 140-145 I personally when mine was stalk ( but not any more) I got up to 130 with no problem and decided to slow down because it was 2 in the morning where there is tons of deer around ther and the passenger was about to pee his pants..( he he he )

However, 130 mph isn't a very hight top speed, don't yuo think ? That is, for a sporting/muscle car...

Sure 130 isn't that fast compared to 200 like a ferrari. But none of us can afford a ferrari and most of us would never go 200 mph. Have you ever drove 130 mph in a car?

What you said is true. But generally high speed is synonymous of power...

Today a medium/high car (like a Bmw, Mercedes, etc...) car reach a speed like 130 mpg without problems. But they aren't muscle/sporting cars, nor race cars.

The fact is this: it is said that the Trans-Am are muscle car, so we expect high performances. But today any Bmw car (and many Japanese's cars) exceed any 3° generation Trans-Am.

I love the Trans-Am, but it's a little embarrassing to enter on a car like this (that seems big, beautiful, grand) and read "120" mpg on the speedometer.

many of the cars have 140-145 mph speedometers like my car does. The 3rd generation TA was considered that back when it came out. Since then they came out with the new lt1 4th gen and ls1 4.5 gen. Those are much faster just like the new bmws and such are much faster then they used to be. You're comparing apples to oranges. You can't compare a 15-20 year old sports car to a state of the art luxury car. Top speed really is factored by rear end gears and the transmission. I've seen many 4th gen camaros/TA with the t56 going 150 mph down the interstate. I'm sure if you had 2.77 gears with a 700r4 tranny you could get up to 140 mph. Or even drop in the corvette 2.23 gears or whatever they were and go even faster.

I am not going to comment on right or wrong but I know for a fact an 89 GTA L98 can push 140+ with a 700R4 and 3.27 gears. I have logged my speed with tuning software because my speedo only registers to 140MPH. I also have some tranny mods that allow my tranny to shift into 4th gear at WOT. On my car the 3-4 shift is at 110MPH. Now with some mods on the motor the car has been over 150MPH. The hadnling is amazing but the whole idea of something going wrong at that speed scares the crap out of me

I WOULD NEVER want to try this on a 20 year old car with many miles and no new parts. My car has had just about every piece of suspension/engine/tranny, ect. upgraded or replaced new.And even that is no guarentee. Just my opinion...

Tuned Port cars will shift into OD at WOT at about 90 mph with the 700 R-4 trans. At least mine does, and it's a bone-stock 1989 L98 GTA with 3.27 gears and dual cats. I've had mine at 120 mph on several occasions, and with the car still pulling for more.

Maxed-out, I recall in magazine testing back in the day they will hit 145 mph if equipped with the L98 (350) and dual cats option.

The GTA with 3.27 gears I presume will go beyond the 140MPH but you have to consider the tire factor. You have to use the correct tire to get there safely. I would not attempt to go there even though my Bridgestone Potenzas are rated to 140MPH. I have gone 110MPH and it was still pulling strong but had to let off because this was on the interstate.

I have been past there in my car. I think it was around 145mph, just by measurin the distance. But, as far as tires I had Goodyear Eagle GSC's. My car seems to want to squat after a certain mph. Sometimes I have noticed after I got home and parked after gettin off the interstate runnin at say 85-90 mph the front of the car pops up a little, not much but just a little.
Oh but back to the original, I have done it once or twice on the interstate, but the on I did it one late is extremely straight, and there was no traffic when I did it. I really should have done it on a closed coarse. Only thing is the closest one is in Utah.

If your car shifts into 4th gear at WOT then I can guarantee its not factory. I have ahd a couple of 89's now and one only had 36000km when I bought it with the original tires still. Also with a 700R4 and 3.27's if you shift into 4th gear at 90 MPH your max RPM in 3rd gear right befor the shift will barely be 4 grand. What are the shift points in the other gears??? If 3-4 is that low then they will all be that low. Sounds like you need some work on your governor.

It could be a bit more than 90, but its in that ball park. My understanding is all TPI cars with the 700 R4 can upshift at WOT into 4th - otherwise, its pretty tough to hit the 140 mph top speed in 3rd gear.

It's the opposite of what you think, the only car that was made to shift into 4th gear at WOT is the corvette. It has a special kickdown unit which most people put into their 700r4. You can also buy it aftermarket from many places. Here is a link to the part i'm talking about. Summit says some firebirds and camaros had it but when i read up on it awhile back it said only corvettes got it.

I don't remember specifics but I know some f-bodys did get the kickdown switch from the factory.

Okay - I can positively state my car *does* shift into OD under WOT at about 105-110 MPH. I did it yesterday on the way to work out on the highway. My car is completely stock - it has zero aftermarket mods. My understanding is that certain TPI cars will shift into OD under WOT - maybe it has something to do with additional performance options ordered on the car, I don't know. Mine has dual cats, PBR rear disc brakes and aluminum driveshaft, as well as the L98 engine.

Same hear. When I first bought my car it would do the same with no problem at all.
