89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

I saw this today at Trans Am Nationals. I looked for the owner but was never able to talk with him. Anyone know anything about this:

My first hunch is...well, I'll see what you guys think....

Me neither, and no such markings.

If you look in the photos, there are other signs not so obvious. Like the 87 steering wheel and the car is an 89.

I don't remember what class it was in, but I know it wasn't in the stock class. Tech Line Inspector put it in a modified class.

I am throwing the BS flag. Looked through a bunch of resources I own and can't find anything about it. Thought it might be something I've never heard of before and just wanted some input from other members.

Re: 89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

No such beast as a special 89.

White was white...Same paint code as the turbo trans am.
WS6 was first introduced in 1977 or 78 on the 2nd gen trans am.

The 5.7 HO sticker is a vinyl sticker. I had those in silver for my red trans am. It comes as a set with the sail panel and nose birds, all vinyl.

It has the L98 f-body engine it (Cast iron heads, EGR cross over ports, s****y valve seals, fuel lines on driver's side if I remember right). Corvettes had aluminum heads@54cc, higher compression ratio with no EGR cross over ports on it and an external EGR. The fuel lines were also reversed on the corvette engine.

It just looks like it's a GTA with some extras thrown at it for looks and a blurb that someone has pulled RPO code numbers to make it sound extra special.

More than likely it's an 87 with 89 interior or cobbled together to the owner's tastes...I think I see rear shoulder belts. Those were also only available in later years. Unless there was a special interior panel just for the cargo covers...but I don't think so...

Take it for what it's worth, it looks nice.

Re: 89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

Oh yeah, it was a nice car, paint was really nice.

Not sure why someone would make these claims in the first place.

Thanks for confirming the paint code, I thought that was correct.

Re: 89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

I just bought an 89 TTA with 8K original miles from my friend. It took me 20 years to acquire it from him but it was well worth the wait. I did a lot of resarch over the years and never heard this before. I would say BS!

I will take some new shots this weekend. I detailed the car last weekend. It was a mess when I got it a few weeks ago.

Re: 89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

This car took 1st place in its class too.....

I did see the owner at the show and he was very elusive when I asked questions. The car was clearly repainted plus all of the other obvious changes that have already been mentioned.

Not sure how a car like that (wrong parts, decals, and a BS story) can take first place at a national Trans AM show????

It was a clean nice car, just NOT what he says it is......

That is ODD!
Kind of puts the nationals in a bad light

Well, he was in heavy modified (I-class) due to the 15 plus changes (or something like that) to the car. The only issue I had was the story he made up about the car on the paint codes and the production numbers.

9567 paint code I believe was the white that Pontiac switched to in 1991. The 8554 ran from 1986 to 1990 (again, not positive). So, he picked a color that wasn't even available in 89.

Not sure why you would try to pull that off at the Trans Am Nationals, where people would know better?

Me too, I couldn't agree more. Not sure why somebody would do that.

Thankfully, the Tech Line Inspector knew about third gen cars to put it in that class.

It would put the Nats in a bad light had they believed the nonsense and stuck him in a stock or light mod class, but fortunately they put him in the proper class it sounds like. As far as the first place goes, that class is usually lighter on participants from what I recall and as long as the mods are well executed and he got it clean and presented it well, it will get you high numbers. It all about how it looks when the judges walk around it lol.

There is an 89 Formula running around here that has a show board saying his is one of 1500 or something like that and I MIGHT believe it except that its a base Formy with a 305 TBI---NOT TPI. I just smile every time I see him at a show or cruise night. I would love to know where he got his numbers.............maybe from this guy with his 20th anniversary GTA lol.

Me too can't believe someone would make up such a foolish story and try to pass it off at the TRANS AM NATIONALS.
The hood bird is not correct reminds of one i had on my 85 trans-am and the 5.7 LITER HO vinyl sticker well its just vinyl.

Re: 89 GTA WS6 20 Anniversary? Fact or BS?

I know this is somewhat of an old post but jumping in on this anyway. This 89 GTA claim to be an anniversary is bogus. I have a 89 TTA and it's a Festival car, cloth interior T-Top. She is build #124 and her track number is #96 because she was at Indy. These cars were Identified by a special Vin 1st 3 digits 1G5 instead of 1G2. The 5 stood for incomplete car because they all were sent to PAS for conversion with NO engine and tranny. They all came with Beechwood interior and NONE of them came with the L98 TPI motor. I am doutful it's an 89 because in your first pic, I am seeing a Tripod steering wheel. All GTAs 88 and up had steering wheel controls for radio, and ALL TTAs had them too. 87 GTA could have had a tripod wheel. Good friend of mine has 87 5.0 5spd with the tripod wheel. Now on another note, the picture you show is a beautiful car and one I would like to have myself but not advertised as an anniversary.
