Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

For adoption to a good home, original owner 1988 Trans Am GTA medium gray metallic (official for gunmetal), 5.7 engine, analog gauges, all GTA options. I took delivery of this car in January 1988 and have had the pleasure of owning it for the last 27 years. It is in pristine condition, all 100% original, absolutely no rust, dings or scratches and is between Hagerty insurance’s #2 and #1 condition definitions (it is award winning and very close to concours). Have all paperwork, work invoices and original window MSRP sticker. Only serious offers please. If you can find a better GTA in the world at a better price buy it! Thanks, Greg 605-232-6343

Welcome to the site.

Always loved the grey GTAs.

A few things may help you sell it: Location, mileage, PRICE

Good luck!

Thanks 86TA355SR I always loved the car too but am retiring and should probably sell some of my toys! I live in South Dakota just north of the Iowa border. I've always used synthetic oil in it and mechanically it's runs perfect and purrs like a kitten. After 27 years I do have 86K on it, which is very little for almost 3 decades, but it was never driven in bad weather, it was always in a heated garage and taken care of. One guy has already looked at the car in town here. When I said I would need at least 15k for it, he seemed to be very interested and I figured I was in the right ball park. We'll see what happens.

Good luck with the sale. I didnt think they made synthetic oil back in the 80s and early 90s but I could be wrong. Wish it had T-top but I know that wasnt avail in 88 with a 5.7 I think it is a 13-15 car if you can show engine, under body and interior I think we could tell you pretty easy.

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

UPDATE 1-13-2015 I just posted 10 more photos of the car's engine and interior that I took today! Man, it's cold out there! I needed to start it anyway and keep the battery charged. See 'SD 1988 GTA' in the Member Albums for the 10 new photos. And I also posted a picture of the speedometer showing 83k instead of 86K (I misquoted before). thanks 1badGTA for your help. I started using synthetic when it first came out probably in the 90's like you sad. thanks everyone Greg 605-232-6343

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

Also I think your price is high for that many miles. Mine would be a 13-15K car at this point I think with 21K on the clock and one of 809 5 speed GTAs that year. while it is nice after look at the pics I would not say it is concourse level but it is nice for the miles!

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

Thanks for your help 1badGTA in posting the pictures for me and mentioning that I should post my car on the other site. I never said that I'm not willing to negotiate on the price, but I do want a fair price for it or I'll just keep it. Hagerty's #2 rating definition says 'an original car that shows little wear and is in 'excellent' condition.' That's my car exactly as you can tell by my pictures. Concours is their #1 rating. I said It's between a #1 and #2. And their fair price for a #2 1988 Trans Am GTA is $15,300. A #1 rating is in the 20's. An original owner, uncompromised, unrestored, gunmetal grey, 5.7 GTA is a find in my book.

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

Good looking GTA and good luck. It will take a specific buyer but that person could be out there. I would make two suggestions that will help you make the price more palatable to that possible future owner. One, detail your engine bay. With the way you are describing it, I would expect to open the hood and get sunburn from the shine of the TPI runners. That of course doesn't mean covering it up with tire dressing lol. Two, get the fabric on the door panels restretched and attached properly. This is of course assuming both look like the pic of the passenger door. I know you are stressing "original" and it still will be but it needs to be addressed. If there is one thing I've learned from showing mine is presentation, presentation, presentation makes the biggest impression and I think it'll pay off in the long run.......it did in my case anyway lol. Again, GLWS.

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

Thanks GTAbill your points are well taken. I didn't know you could stretch the door material that way but it does makes sense because I've had carpets stretched in my house that were getting bunched up before. And a cleaner engine bay is always a good thing in selling a car. But even if i don't sell the car, I feel like I've met some good GTA friends. thanks, Greg 605-232-6343

Thanks GTABill I didn't know you could restretch the door material like that, but it makes sense. I've had carpeting in my house stretched when it bunches up. When it warms up I'm planning on cleaning the engine bay up some more too.

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

I will talk with a friend of mine who does upholstery work and see what he would charge and that might give you a ballpark idea. I use the term stretching, but what it probably amounts to is removing the old, reapplying adhesive and then trimming whats not needed (if necessary). My sunvisors are doing the "sag" thing and it drives me nuts lol

Let me know if you need some pointers on cleaning that engine bay. It's pretty simple.......mostly elbow grease.

I had my entire headliner and sail panels and visors redone in new cloth. I didn't even think about the door panels. shoot. I did it since mine dented when touched... the foam backing would basically turn to dust.

1badGTA, where did you get the foam padding, somewhere like Classic Industries? I also noticed the plastic/vinyl around shifter base wants to pull out a little, what do you guys do for that? Just a little warping with age I guess. I don't think a person should try and glue that tho. thanks , Greg

Re: Close To Concours Original Owner 1988 GTA

OK guys I like to look at the Knight Rider gauges too but we have to be upfront and truthful here. In the 1980's there was truly nothing digital about these dashs. In the 80's there were no computer prosessors or chips at all to speak of and these cars' dashes were basically a bunch of sensors and bllnking lights. It was a world when noone had even heard of Intel, Apple or Windows yet and wouldn't for another 10 years. These dashes did have a 'cool' factor but were very problematic, expensive to repair and not even close to being as accurate as the analog gauges that I have. I wouldn't trade mine for anything. There I said my peace. I'm not trying to pick an argument or anything just stating facts.
