"Yellow Tag" TPI 350?

Hey guys, so my car is up for sale and a person that was veiwing it noticed my engine had a GM motorsport sticker on the plenum and yellow markings on the some of the bolts. He reffererd to it as a "yellow tag" engine. Apparently they had some performance upgrade in areas such as cam, cylinder heads ect.. I have never heard of this and dont know if he's full of it or not? He also said the engine shouldnt be in my car. The cars a 89 GTA. Heres a link to a picture for reference

Re: "Yellow Tag" TPI 350?

That's a new one to me. The only optional performance package(s) offered when the cars were new was the 1991-up SLP packages that were sold as dealer installs or over-the-counter to customers. Nothing was available in 1989 when the car was new.

The car could have a different engine or later performance parts added to it, I suppose; I've never seen a factory-installed plenum like that with engraved writing on it, either. Interesting.

I'd have a hard time seeing a "GM Performance Parts" engine being used as a warranty replacement piece, but hey.... who knows? Let us know if you find out more info.

Re: "Yellow Tag" TPI 350?

There have been instances where vehicles were produced with engines for "long term testing" where if the engine experienced any needed repairs the engine was replaced under warranty. My grandmother's pickup had one of these when it was brought in for a lower than normal oil pressure and the replaced the complete engine assembly. The original engine had yellow markings on several bolts throughout the engine too.

So then that means the engine is not numbers matching to the car.
Unless you have the dealership papers confirming the swap.
I wonder, is there a SR stamping on the block, like early generation cars?

Re: "Yellow Tag" TPI 350?

the plenum looks to just be a plenum with a performance shops name on it. the only thing i could find for predator motorsports right now was a shop that deals with hummers.

you could try getting ahold of gm about the whole yellow tag information.

Re: "Yellow Tag" TPI 350?

Simple answer to this one for us Canadian F-car fans. That is an LB9 engine from an RPO A4U or R7U Player's Challenge/GM Motorsports showroom stock race car. A cool series that ran up here across Canada from 86-92.
These engines were specially built and sealed (yellow paint) at the Flint engine plant alongside the Corvette Challenge L98s which had the same sticker on the plenums minus the little red maple leaf. These engines were then shipped to the plants to be installed in these batch built, specially optioned Firebird and Camaro race cars which were basically 1LEs with a few extras.
No real changes to the engines other than being fully blueprinted with flow matched injectors and dynoed to ensure equalized power output. Rumour has it that they made around 250HP, so certainly more than the 220-230 HP the standard LB9s made...

Teams were allowed to run cars for two years but had to change engines for the new year. Thus many were sold off as they were no longer legal for the series and ended up being installed in regular F-cars, hot rods and such...

BTW: A wealth of info on this can be found at this website dedicated to these rare factory race cars:
