1987 GTA 5.7 t-top new project pics as i go

well i was just online looking around and saw this gta for sale. with 46000 miles it seamed like a nice car.
the guy bought the car in calgary alberta in 1990. in 2000 he moved far away and left the car at his moms place. once a year when he would visit he would dive it ,for the next 12 years. always garaged kept.
his mother is now 82 and the property was sold. knowing this i made an offer on the car and picked it up.
all original except cap rotor wires, tires in 1990, and k&n filter.

as i fix it up i will post pictures.
it looks like the emblems might be red? i have ordered a new set in flame red.
has 5.7, t-tops, cargo cover and the subwoofer system. from what i understand usa cars did not have these options for some reason
is it possible that it did not have the side door bump guards from the factory??

what i would like to do is fix paint on front bumper and drivers fender to make the car perfect.
change the cat back
install sportline springs
put newer tires i have on it.
thats about it keep it as orignal as i can.

just some quick pics from the day i bought it

Re: 1987 GTA 5.7 t-top new project pics as i go

Perhaps the export models did not have the side bumpers. Or perhaps they were removed by someone. Regardless, the car seems to be in very good condition. I would agree that you got a nice GTA, no damages and very original. Nice to see it.

By the way, how can you tell if it is a 5.7 liter engine? Did you look at the RPO sticker and find the correct code on there or did you look at the vin number, as the eighth digit in the vin indicates the size of the engine.

Re: 1987 GTA 5.7 t-top new project pics as i go

Yes, that is the correct (and best looking) steering wheel for the 87 GTA. Great looking car too. You indeed have a 5.7L Canadian GTA with export only options. Do you have the cargo shade too?

I am pretty sure the bodyside moldings were a stand-alone option in 1987. I have seen a lot of '87 GTAs without them.

Nice find!

Re: 1987 GTA 5.7 t-top new project pics as i go

I have read that some Flame Red cars came with Bright Red emblems. Looks to be in great condition however that front bumper looks as if it has already once been repainted because they paint looks to be a shade off in one of those pics up above. How does it run for being so low miles?

I think you made the right choice (top ones i assume), you have to lose the 4x4 hood prop though .... LOL. Get new gas struts.

Nice flame red car. My seats came with lumbar support, but my hood does not have lumber support! Sorry, could not resist. The interior looks really nice and that is a cool steering wheel.

Re: 1987 GTA 5.7 t-top new project pics as i go

I have probably seen hundreds of GTAs in person since I purchased my own 1987 GTA. I have probably seen more than twice as many as that on the internet and in photographs also, and every GTA that I have ever seen that is the flame red color never had the flame red color emblems. Even my own GTA did not have the flame red color emblems. The flame red GTAs all had the bright red emblems on them that you would think only were to be put on the bright red GTAs. All of the other colors that the GTA came in matched the color of the emblems, but the only GTA that did not match was the flame red color. I wonder why this is? I just guess that perhaps the colors of the GTA were approved and the emblems were already made and then right at the last minute before production of the cars, they decided to add the flame red color option to the GTA and just use the bright red emblems.

I never even noticed it on my own GTA until around eight years ago. So now I have two brand new complete sets of spare emblems for my GTA that are original GM emblems, not the aftermarket ones. One set is of the flame red color and the other complete set is the bright red color emblems. I think the flame red color looks better on my GTA because they match the car color, but I also have the bright red color emblems too to make my GTA factory correct if I decide to do that. Both sets are not on my GTA because I just worry that someone will steal them from my car if I decide to stop some time to shop while I am driving my GTA. I also have a flame red nose emblem on my GTA now which was used when I purchased it from the wrecking yard about forteen years ago. That is the only one of the emblems that I have on my GTA right now.

One thing to remember is if you purchased the aftermarket emblems, the hood emblem seems to not have the exact same contour as the bumper cover where it should be mounted, unless the maker fixed that imperfection. I saw some for sale at a wrecking yard about six or seven years ago and I could tell by placing a real original nose emblem next to the aftermarket reproduction nose emblem that the aftermarket one was more flat and not rounded as the original one is.

I thought I had the wrong emblems on my 87 Flame Red GTA as well. I have the Bright Red and thought they were suppose to be the Flame Red. That just confirms that the 87's had Bright Red emblems instead of the Flame Red emblems.

In 1987, there were 3 options not available with the 5.7 in the US, t-tops, cargo shade and subwoofer system. No restrictions on these options in 1989.

pretty snow flake wheels.

I like the look of the 77-78 front vs the 79-81
