Steering wheel and shifter leather

I have a question. I have the 1988 steering wheel and it is wrapped in black leather. but the shifter is wrapped in dark gray leather. I have noticed ones sold on Barrett Jacksons website also having the same issue. anyone know why they used two different colors.

i think it's because all the dashes are black, and all the centre consoles are dark grey

Re: Steering wheel and shifter leather

IIRC, it has to do with the Custom interior trim option. Different sections are colored different, sometimes very subtly and sometimes not to assist in reducing interior glare and reflections. That's why the steering wheel matches the dashpad and the rest of the soft interior pieces are different colored.

It has been done for a while, as my 1981 Trans Am was the same way, using a combination of red and maroon.

Re: Steering wheel and shifter leather

I guess Sean was right!
thank Frankie.
I was just thinking about it when I want to be sure about originality.

on another topic I was at a breakfast placed this week called Marie scramblers and the owner also owned a CHevy dealership. I told him about my baby and he thought it would be worth 20k today as I was saying it would in about 5-10 yrs. I just laughed
not yet but will. when I bought it the guy wanted 18 and I paid around half that

Re: Steering wheel and shifter leather

If there is two different colors, black and gray, is it possible that the black ones would indicate that it is the original one that came with the car and then the replacement ones at the GM Dealership would be in the gray color, to indicate that they have been replaced before?

Not necessarily. Some OEM replacement parts come in grey only, especially the ones common to all models. Each year's service manual has a section where the interior color usage is listed so that the colors can be replicated on replacement parts.
